“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
Romans 1:16

THE GOSPEL

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
–John 3:16-19

[For the entire story of Jesus’ meeting with Nicodemus, from which the above Scripture was taken, see John 3:1-21.]

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

–Romans 10:9-10

Repent (turn away) from your sin. Bear good fruit. Preach the gospel.

All that being said, the gospel of Jesus Christ is the “power of salvation unto God.”

“And when they were come to him, he said unto them, Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you at all seasons, Serving the Lord with all humility of mind, and with many years, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews: And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house, Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

A clearer explanation of repentance:

“The Gospel is not a call to repentance, or to amendment of our ways, to make restitution for past sins, or to promise to do better in the future. These things are proper in their place, but they do not constitute the Gospel; for the Gospel is not good advice to be obeyed, it is good news to be believed. Do not make the mistake then of thinking that the Gospel is a call to duty or a call to reformation, a call to better your condition, to behave yourself in a more perfect way than you have been doing in the past …

Nor is the Gospel a demand that you give up the world, that you give up your sins, that you break off bad habits, and try to cultivate good ones. You may do all these things, and yet never believe the Gospel and consequently never be saved at all.”

  1. I can’t say I’m impressed. I find the verses used for this decision theology based prayer rather interesting, notwithstanding that they are out of context. Also, did the disciples tell the crowds on the day of Pentecost to pray a prayer of any sort, or did they simply call upon the people to repent? The way this is presented, it is almost like a magic spell. Knowing that you have seen Forklift Theology, I would ask of you to consider the post called “Zap”, which looks at this prayer and questions whether or not it is truly Biblical. It is easy to build a an unBiblical false doctrine by simply stringing together a series of selected verses, twisting them out of their original context in the process. Joel Osteen and Tim LaHaye have been doing it for years. Indeed, by your own words do I see this as a problem. You say, “Everyone needs a ticket to heaven. It’s free and easy as 1-2-3-4 to obtain.” I assure that it is not. You show a lack of distinction between Law and Gospel. In doing so, this prayer is a “works righteousness” that I can assure you that in those who were giving testimonies in another of your posts have also “prayed”. Not only that, but Christ Jesus did not tell the disciples to pray in that manner. Rather he gave them the manner in which we are to pray, commonly called in liturgical churches as “The Lord’s Prayer” which can be found in the Gospel of Matthew 6:9~13 and the Gospel of Luke 11:2~4. Naturally, that is not the first prayer in the Bible, that honor belongs to Abraham’s servant. Even then, it was based upon God’s will. This “prayer” that you have presented is more of a demand upon God that if you say these words in this manner and firmly believe it, it obligates God to save you. I have said no such prayer and yet I believe that Christ Jesus is the only son of God and also the Lord God Almighty, the second person of the Trinity. Am I then damned because I have said no such prayer? I tell you the truth, many will say they prayed this and yet will be condemned for they prayed in earnest for a lie. There are a total of six “I” statements in that “prayer”. Far better would it be to simply pray, as the publican in Luke 18:13, “Lord have mercy on me, a sinner”. I suppose the question is yours to ask. Which is better, the self exalting prayer presented in this blog or the openly confessional prayer of the publican? I can not answer that for you. For myself, I would rather pray unto God to have mercy upon me, a sinner.

    1. Christopher Rose,

Thank you for taking the time to stop by and leave such a detailed comment. I cannot say that I disagree with all of your points.

However, did you even read the post in question?

This “prayer” that you have presented is more of a demand upon God that if you say these words in this manner and firmly believe it, it obligates God to save you. I have said no such prayer and yet I believe that Christ Jesus is the only son of God and also the Lord God Almighty, the second person of the Trinity. Before the prayer is the call to repentance and the need to publicly confess and believe. There is also the admonition that this is merely the beginning.

I noticed that on “Forklift Theology” there is no gospel message, no call for repentance AT ALL that is accessible to the reader from your home page or any of your posts which I read. So what’s the purpose of your writing?

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”
      –Mark 16:15

We’re commanded to spread the gospel. I am making the imperfect attempt to do just that.

Thank you for your opinions on the different prayers to be prayed.

I do like the simplicity of the publican’s prayer. That’s is huge point in its favor.

But I do favor a prayer that forces someone who has just realized they are a sinner to think of each point in the “self-exalting” prayer. However, I will revisit the prayer, line-by-line.

I do not believe in the “Sinner’s prayer.” I DO believe in Roman 10, particularly Romans 10:9-10 (which was in the post), Romans 10:11 and Romans 10:13.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

“For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Getting a sinner to “call upon the name of the Lord” is one of the chief aims of this site.

I’ll leave it to others to argue over exactly what words ought to be in the mouths of those who come to the point of making that call.

Thank you once more for taking the time to stop and leave a comment.

ps…Your zeal and boldness are commendable.

  2. There is no free ticket to heaven,if we are to follow Yeshua Messiah it will cost us everything, its not free,it wasn’t free for Yeshua, its cost him his life, and it will cost everyone the same, unless you are willing to forsake all,you can not be Yeshua’s disciple Luke 14:33,that means we must be willing to obey him and his Torah(law),salvation is not based just on a persons confession, but involves his actions as well, the idea that a person can confess Jesus,go to church and call themselves Christians, and be saved is totally insane,Faith without Commandment keeping is dead,if we are going to confess Yeshua as saviour then we should also be willing to walk as he walked, and he kept the Law perfectly we should also.

    1. You are just one of the many people that are deceived by the counterfeit gospel of “Lordship Salvation”. “Lordship Salvation” is a false gospel which requires forsaking of sins as a requirement of salvation. The true gospel is that you forsake your sins because you are saved, not in order to be saved. Hope that God opens your eyes.
