LAC-MEGANTIC: NO ALERT WENT OUT
More information coming out on the Lac-Megantic train wreck, explosion that devastated an entire section of the small Quebec town.
18 minutes of silence: No alert went out as runaway train barrelled into Quebec town:
Authorities were never made aware that a runaway train was on its way to levelling part of a small Quebec town, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said Tuesday.
The report further stated that, due to the lack of warning, rail authorities never had a ‘chance to intervene.’
The in-depth article from the Calgary Herald contains quotes from various railway officials which indicate that there will be further investigations into the railroad derailment and subsequent explosion at Lac-Megantic Quebec.
This latest information does nothing to quiet fears that this might have been more than just an “accident.”
Pieces like DOT-111 Oil Tank Cars, Like Those In Lac-Megantic, Quebec Disaster, Long Seen As Flawed support claims that the train wreck and explosion were a way to jump-start various oil pipeline schemes by highlighting the dangers in transporting oil by rail.
NOTE: One interesting point reported in this article was, although most of Lac-Megantic’s downtown area was completely destroyed, the town’s mayor is publicly begging possible tourists not to take the Quebec town off their lists as a travel destination.

Let me attempt to explain how train brakes work. News stories keep referring to the train’s air brakes “set” to park the train. A train’s air brakes are useful only to retard, stop and hold the train while crew is on board. Each car carries an air reservoir which is replenished when the brakes are not applied. Air pressure in the train’s air line releases the brakes. When the engineer applies the brakes, his valve lowers the pressure in the train air line, or exhausts it in an emergency, and a valve on each car uses that car’s air reservoir to apply the brakes. There is no need to leave an engine idling to “maintain” air for the brakes. Any air in the train air line releases the brakes. To park the train and leave it unattended, hand applied brakes must be set on each car, as many as may be needed to hold the train. The locomotive’s brakes are set the same way. A big wheel or a ratchet lever rotates a drum to wind a chain that pulls on the brake linkage to apply the brakes. There is no air to leak and release the brakes. As each must be manually applied, each must be manually released.
