CAN I GET A WITNESS?
OVERHEARD IN AN AMERICAN CHURCH
During a service in an American church about a year ago, it was announced that it was time for testimonies. About a dozen or so people were called upon to make public their “testimony.”
The first few testimonies came from those who were part of the “praise and worship team.”
“I’m so lucky to be a part of this church!”
“We’re blessed to have such a wonderful pastor and his wife!”
“I was wandering around in the dark, but since I’ve been a part of this church, I’ve learned so much!”
And so on.
After twelve or thirteen such “testimonies,” one thing stood out.
Not one person had named “Jesus” or “Christ” or “Jesus Christ.”
One older man did mention “the Lord.”
Once.
The only mention of God’s goodness was one who had thanked God for leading her to that particular church.
A few months later, a similar event occurred with various people chosen by the worship leader to once again give their “testimony.”
The accounts of this second event closely mirrored the ones of the first.
Many were thankful, but were thankful for the church building as a meeting place, the family (social) atmosphere it provided, the intensive specialized training that the youth were receiving, the pastor and his wife who oversaw it all.
Once again, Jesus was left out of the testimonies.
Actually, the second time around, no one even mentioned “the Lord.”
At the end of this second round of testimonies, the congregation clapped, as it did after the first time.
No one seemed to notice that more than two dozen people, on two different occasions, had stood and publicly declared how their lives had changed.
And not one of them had mentioned Jesus.
Not one of those providing testimonies seemed to realize that they had missed an opportunity.
“Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.”

Sad.
The church in question prided itself on its enthusiastic worship and it’s love of Jesus. How many times did the words “I’m so proud…” fall from the lips of the pastor or the worship leader?
No one seemed uncomfortable that pride is a sin.
Was this church the exception in America? Or is it the rule? One suspects that there are a great many more churches filled with people who are thankful for a great many things. Some of the pew-sitters may even be thankful for Jesus–if they were given enough time to compile a longer list.
One suspects that there are also a great many more churches filled with people who are willing to testify of those things which cause them to swell with pride.
With all of the good things in life that cause so many to be so proud, who has time to remember Jesus?
Christian testimonies that do not mention the name of Jesus Christ?
Only in an apostate nation convinced of its devotion to Christ.
Only in an apostate country proud of its Christian history.
Only in the times in which we live.
Only in America.
