Unity that is not built on faith in Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is an abomination to God the Father. There is no unity between sinners, dead in their trespasses and sins, who reject Jesus Christ and are led by the prince of the power of the air and those who have been bought with the precious blood of Jesus Christ and are indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The unregenerate are of the world and listen to the father of lies, while those who belong to God the Father through faith in Jesus Christ are the redeemed and listen to God’s Word, the Holy Scriptures, taught to them by the Holy Spirit. The world is at enmity with God and those who love the world are in the enemy’s camp. Any effort to bring about spiritual rapport between unregenerate sinners and the beloved of the Lord is a work of Satan and leads to compromise, heresy and apostasy.

Jesus Christ made it perfectly clear that there is an unbridgeable chasm between those who belong to God the Father and those who belong to the father of lies. God’s children belong to His kingdom while the children of the devil belong to perdition. Unity with religious unbelievers is impossible!
42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. 44You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. 45But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? 46And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? 47He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.” John 8:42-47
The hallmark of unbelievers is they do not hear God’s Word. They reject the Bible as the inerrant, infallible, inspired Word of God. They attack Jesus Christ and demean His person and the glorious work the Father gave Him to do which He completely fulfilled; the redemption of lost sinners through His death upon the cross in their stead and His resurrection from the dead for their eternal life. There is no fear of God before the eyes of these irreligious liars and they openly mock Jesus Christ, the One to Whom we must answer since He is the Judge of the living and the dead.

Any call for unity between those who belong to God the Father through faith in Jesus Christ and those who deny Christ and His Word, is a deceitful tactic of the devil meant to lead men and women into irreverence and apostasy. There are many in our day who are trying to join together those who are lost and those who have a “claim” to Christian faith. Pope Francis is trying to reconcile Christians, Jews and Muslims. Rick Warren and Bill Hybels see the Muslim faith as comparable to the Christian faith believing that Allah and God the Father, Mohammed and Jesus Christ, and the Koran and the Bible are equivalently valid.
The grandfather of this heretical ecumenical movement is Billy Graham who accepted grossly apostate modernists and Catholics as “brothers in the Lord.” This he stated many times even though both strains of apostasy contradict God’s Word and deny the truth about Jesus Christ found exclusively in the Bible.
Billy Graham honored the modernist Episcopalian Bishop James Pike, who denied both the Trinity and the Virgin Birth, by having Pike on the platform and pray at his evangelistic crusade in San Francisco, by speaking at Pike’s Grace Cathedral and then by having Pike at his crusade in Detroit. The Catholics who came forward during Graham’s San Francisco crusade in 1958 remained in the Catholic Church at his behest, lost in the damnable deceitful doctrine that is the foundation of that false faith. The chairman of that crusade was the apostate Methodist Bishop Gerald Kennedy who denied virtually every doctrine of faith in Christ. What is the unity of the Spirit? It is defined by the unity that blood bought believers in Christ have amongst themselves because of their adherence to the Word of God and the unity of faith that is theirs through the indwelling Holy Spirit. The passage about unity found in Ephesians chapter 4 gives us a clear picture of what is well pleasing to God our Father and our glorious Savior Jesus Christ.
1I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, 2with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, 3endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. 7But to each one of us grace was give according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.” 9(Now this, “He ascended”-what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) 11And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; 14that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, 15but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head-Christ-16from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Obviously, unity of the Spirit is only for those who belong to Christ Jesus through faith in Him and have turned from the lie and embraced the truth. Our unity produces godly growth that conform us to our head, Jesus Christ. So we as believers cannot have spiritual unity with anyone who denies the truth of the Scriptures, and rejects God’s Word about His Son, because they have no inheritance in Christ. Our unity is only with those who belong to God the Father through His Son Jesus Christ and are recipients of the gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.
God tells us in His Word that on the one hand we must strive for unity with one another, on the other hand we must reject any kind of unity with unbelievers. We must reject false professors for the growth of our faith and walk with our holy God.
14Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever? 16And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them And walk among them. I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” 17Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you. 18I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.” 1Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1
Those such as Rick Warren, Bill Hybels, and Billy and Franklin Graham, who teach contrary to the Scriptures about our separation from unbelievers, prove that they are false workers set in our midst to do the work of the devil in deceiving and leading astray God’s children. Reject them and hold fast to the truth of the Scriptures seeking the unity of the Spirit that only exists amongst God’s precious children who are His through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. Our work among unbelievers is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ so that they too may be the redeemed of the Lord Jesus Christ through faith in Him and filled with His Holy Spirit. Then we may walk in unity because of our mutual faith in Jesus Christ and life through the Spirit of God who indwells His children.
