INTRODUCTION
PART ONE IN A SERIES ON BIBLICAL DISCERNMENT
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.”
—Hebrews 5:14
“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines.”
—Hebrews 13:9
QUESTIONS ABOUT DISCERNMENT
There is a great deal written these days about discernment and discerning.
So then: why is there so little of it exhibited in the churches these days?
How much of what is written is biblical?
Is there anything to be done for the Christian who recognizes the blanket of deception which has been thrown over seemingly everything he touches, hears or sees?
This piece will serve as a short introduction to some observations on discernment, what is being taught in these last days and what the Bible says about what is being taught. Several topics will be touched upon in the upcoming series. A few observations will center around:
- What is biblical discernment?
- Can a person increase their discernment? How?
- Are Christians bound to be deceived? Is there no alternative?
- Why is there so little discernment operating in the churches?
- Why can’t one just depend on the many “discernment ministries” which are operating? How much can one trust Discernment Incorporated?
- How can a Christian hope to avoid deception when deception is ubiquitous?
- What does the Bible say about deception, discernment and the last days?
- What are the “strange doctrines” and the “cunningly devised fables” that Scriptures speak of?
Other topics and observations may be made along the way.
There is a much in the Bible on these topics. There is much in the Bible about discernment.
There is much in the Bible on these topics which is not often taught these days.
Originally, this was to be one large article, but it’s become too large. Therefore, it’s been broken down into segments for readers who do not have the time to commit to a large piece. It’s planned that parts of this series will appear every 2-3 days. The reader might watch for them!
“Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.”
—Hebrews 13:9
“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.”
—2 Peter 1:16
“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
—James 1:5
