“Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.”
Sound Familiar?
SODOM AND AMERICA: JUDGMENT FOR SIN
WHAT WERE THE SINS OF SODOM?
Most Christians associate Sodom’s destruction with homosexuality. And while homosexuality was ONE of Sodom’s sins, it was not the only one listed in the Bible. In fact, it appears that homosexuality didn’t even make the top five sins over which God marked Sodom for destruction.
Americans should pay attention, particularly American Christians.
Because they disapprove of homosexuality, many church-goers walk around with the idea that America is a “good Christian country.” Because they themselves are not homosexuals, many American Christians feel that the USA will escape the judgment and destruction of Sodom. [The destruction of Sodom is detailed in Genesis 19.]
But what were the sins of Sodom? Ezekiel 16-49-50 lists six–and they should all sound familiar to Americans.
THE SINS OF SODOM
The sins of Sodom were:
- Pride
- Fulness of bread
- An abundance of idleness
- Not strengthening the hand of the poor and needy
- Haughtiness
- Abominations
PRIDE
American pride, proud to be an American and Be proud of who you are! are everywhere in America. Everyone in America is proud of something: their school, their football team, their university, their community, the company they work for, their children, their hometown, their church. The list is practically endless.
Pride is a sin–and America has specialized in turning the sin of pride into a virtue. Even a popular Christian website claims there is good pride and bad pride. The Bible makes no such distinction.
The Bible has plenty to say about Pride and none of it is good.
“When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.“
—Proverbs 11:2
“Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord“
—Proverbs 16:5
“pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.“
—Proverbs 8:13
Because of pride, God destroyed Sodom–which was #1 on the list of the city’s sins.
FULNESS OF BREAD
America tops the List of 10 most obese countries
In Sodom, they ate until they were full. No one went hungry. But eating when one is hungry is not a sin. Eating for other reasons–and there are many–is. Gluttony is sin.
The poor in America might not have a lot, but the government ensures that they can purchase soda, cupcakes, pizza, candy and other sweet treats.
“The United States is the most obese country in the world with 34% of the adult population classified as obese, according to the latest OECD survey. “
–Reuters, Most Obese Countries in the World
ABUNDANCE OF IDLENESS
“Although there are some subtle differences in nuance, the general meaning of idleness is “undisciplined slackness.”
—What does the Bible say about idleness/being idle?
The Bible warns against both idle deeds and idle talk.
Making small talk is a much-valued social skill. “Shooting the breeze” consumes countless hours. Chit-chat, chin wag, gossip, rapping, schmoozing: are all ways of “killing time” with the words of one’s mouth.
Americans are masters of leisure. Vacations, sports, movies, amusement parks, TV, concerts, video and online games, comedy clubs: there are literally hundreds of ways for Americans to spend their time and Satan has devised most of the more popular ones.
Humans are only given so much time. Are you a good steward of the time God has given you? Are you advancing the kingdom of God or are you whiling away the time? Do you feel you “deserve” some time off? Why? Who put that thought in your mind?
America has an abundance of idleness–and most Americans have their reasons why they use their time for activities other than winning souls.

NOT STRENGTHENING THE HAND OF THE POOR AND NEEDY
Many Americans believe government programs or the many professional charities which exist relieve them from giving to the poor and needy themselves.
“But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?”
–1 John 3:17
HAUGHTINESS
“Haughtiness” is exalting yourself, lifting yourself up.
Haughty: having or showing the insulting attitude of people who think that they are better, smarter, or more important than other people.
Attitude. Arrogance. Love of self.
Self-esteem is a form of self-worship.
Is there any better proof than the popular American past-time of the “selfie?”
COMMITTING ABOMINATIONS
At last we come to homosexuality.
But, homosexuality is not the only sin God labels an “abomination.”
Others are
- Wearing clothes of the opposite sex
- Cheating people through dishonest practices
- A lying tongue
- A proud look
- Idols
- Astrology
- Communicating with the dead
- Witchcraft
There is quite a long list of abominations. In fact, all sin is an abomination to a Holy God.
“And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.”
—Luke 16:15
This is the description of Sodom by the Jewish historian Josephus
“the Sodomites, overweeningly proud of their numbers and the extent of their wealth, showed themselves insolent to men and impious to the Divinity, insomuch that they no more remembered the benefits that they had received from him, hated foreigners and declined all intercourse with others. Indignant at this conduct, God accordingly resolved to chastise them for their arrogance…”
–Josephus, Antiquities I: 194-5
JUDGMENT FOR SODOM, JUDGMENT FOR AMERICA
Did any of these sins of Sodom sound familiar?
The sin of Sodom was more than homosexuality–though that was an unmistakable part of it. The sins of Sodom concerned sins that are not only common in America, they’re not even considered to be sins by many Americans.
That should worry any who compare modern America with ancient Sodom. Isaiah 3:9 compares Jerusalem with Sodom. One other thing that should worry Americans.
“And they declare their sin as Sodom; They do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves.“
–Isaiah 3:9
The Sodomites did not hide their sin but were proud of it. They paraded it in the open and flaunted it before God.
Again, sound familiar?
God judged Sodom. God will judge America.
Isaiah and Jeremiah refer to an end times country called Babylon and it’s judgment. Believers can know that the Babylon referred to in Isaiah and Jeremiah is not historical Babylon because historic Babylon was not completely destroyed. Historic Babylon was not destroyed in the same manner as Sodom and Gomorrah (“fire and brimstone from the heavens.”)
And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldees’ excellency, shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.
—Isaiah 13:19
As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD; so shall no man abide there, neither shall any son of man dwell therein.
—Jeremiah 50:40
Wonder which end time country God was referring to?
