“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:”
—Ephesians 5:8
Christians are called to be a light in a dark world.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
—Matthew 5:14-16
This does not mean that the world will love the light. Far from it. Those who love the world and the things of the world hate the light. They hate anyone who shines a light in the darkness. In particular, the world hates Jesus and anyone who stands up for Him.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
—John 3:20-21
If the reader is a Christian: can others see your light? Are you a light in a dark world? The world is getting darker by the day–and Christians are not the only ones shining a light. The grand deceiver also shines a light.
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
—2 Corinthians 11:14
The true Christian will not get many accolades by shining a light. But that doesn’t matter: shine the light of Jesus Christ anyway. Christians are called to be ambassadors for Jesus to a lost and dying world. Christians are to snatch the lost from the fires of hell.
Are you an obedient Christian? Can the world around you see your light?
Though the world hates the light, it will sorely need the light of true believers in the dark days ahead.
GOOD COUNSEL: In the times in which we live, ALL Christians are called to be a light in the midst of darkness. Not to compromise with the world, but to offer a clear alternative to the world. For a majority of American Christians, it’s hard to offer an alternative to the world when they look, sound and act exactly like the world.
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;
–Philippians 2:15 – (h/t:B)
