Self-Love: A Modern American True Love Story

NO TRUER LOVE: Has ever captivated the USA.
NO TRUER LOVE: Has ever captivated the USA.

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves,”
2 Timothy 3:1-2

America is a land which loves itself. America is a land which never tires of promoting itself as the biggest, the best or the ultimate.

And Americans are a people completely in love with themselves.

Celebration of SELF is the biggest celebration in the USA and the amount of time devoted to self is enormous.

  • Self-help.
  • Self-esteem.
  • Self-respect.
  • Self-confidence.
  • Self-defense.
  • Self image.

This list is far from complete.

It seems modern man never tires of talking of himself, exalting himself or taking pictures of himself.

The self-absorbed naturally concentrate on themselves. Their journeys are mostly inward and involve self-discovery. Their deep thoughts revolve around themselves, who they are, what they presume, and what they believe.  These self-centered thoughts may passed along to others disguised as “advice.”

The Millennials are the ultimate Me Generation.  Raised on self-esteem, lectured on the benefits of self-actualization, self-awareness and self-aggrandizing: the one trait they seem to lack is self-control.

It’s no accident that the most celebrated art form of the Millennials is that perfect symbol of self-celebration: the “selfie.”
MAN OF SIN: Self-Worship in America

In fact, Americans are so in love with themselves, they practice a form of self-worship.

When the man of sin comes onto the scene, he will appeal to the “good in people.”  Though he will speak great swelling words of a false brotherhood and unity (for all of those who follow him; death for those who disagree), he will invite each person to search for the good that is within. The appeal will be that “You’re a good person.  Unleash the goodness that dwells within for the benefit of all mankind.”

This directly contradicts Christianity, which teaches that man is wicked, sinful and lost without a savior.
MAN OF SIN: Self-Worship in America

In direct opposition to this culture of self-love is true Christianity.

“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”
Luke 9:23

One way to tell the true Christians from the tares and pretenders is their treatment of self. One denies self; the other, exalts it.

There is no truer indication of the times in which we live than 2 Timothy 3:1-2.

Is the reader living by Jesus’ command to deny oneself?  Or, is the focus on the world’s false, self-serving creed of “You have to love yourself before you can love others?

There is no romance so true as the Modern American love story which takes place between an American and one’s SELF. It’s an indication of the country we live in; it’s an indication of the times in which we live.

“Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
Matthew 16:24

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”
-—1 Corinthians 1:18-19
