Promises of God: Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding

PROMISES OF GOD: The gulf between the promises God makes to believers and the people occupying the pews in the churches is a wide one.
PROMISES OF GOD: The gulf between the promises God makes to believers and the people occupying the pews in the churches is a wide one.

“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”
2 Peter 1:4

The Bible is full of the promises of God to believers.  There are literally dozens and dozens of promises God makes to those who fear Him and keep His commandments. Some have estimated that there are over 7000 promises of God to believers.

To those who are His, God makes many wonderful promises.

“What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.  His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth.”
Psalm 25:12-13

From the time spent in various and sundry churches, one of the biggest concerns of the people who inhabit the pews is “lost loved ones” or “loved ones who do not know the Lord.” If church-goers truly know the Lord, then they can stand on the promises of God concerning those loved ones.

WISDOM, UNDERSTANDING

Some of God’s greatest promises concern wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

These promises are also some of God’s clearest ones. These promises are gifts from God to all believers who ask for them.

“For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.”
Proverbs 2:7-8

Note the Proverbs clearly states that the LORD “layeth up sound wisdom FOR THE RIGHTEOUS.”

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”
James 1:5

Lest there be any misunderstandings, James 1:6 makes clear that only those asking “in faith” will receive the gift of wisdom from God.

But no matter what gifts of knowledge  are sought by the believer, the fear of the LORD is the beginning of all wisdom, knowledge or understanding.

“the fear of the LORD is his treasure.”
Isaiah 33:7

“O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
Romans 11:33

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
Proverbs 9:10

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.”
Proverbs 15:33

Fear of the LORD: Fear is Fear

The fear of the LORD is bound up with a hatred of evil and with a desire to keep the commandments of Jesus.

“The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”
Proverbs 8:13

To those who walk after God and seek to know His ways, knowledge, wisdom and understanding are given. And the knowledge of God surpasses ALL the knowledge of men.

Of all of the promises of God, those concerning wisdom, knowledge and understanding are perhaps His greatest.

“For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.”
Proverbs 8:11

Seeking wisdom, knowledge and understanding is part of any believer’s spiritual preparations for the end times.

THE GOSPEL

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
1 Corinthians 15:1-4
