For some reason, the newspapers recently seemed to be full of talk of “legacies.” A group of students planting flowers and engaging in some minor landscaping to help “keep alive the memory” of a former coach who died suddenly a few years ago. Another group of students holding an event to “memorialize the memory” of another student who died several years ago in a “tragic car accident.”
While sad, the talk about “keeping memories alive” of various humans is futile.
“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”
The “keeping memories alive” industry is a thriving one: stone monuments, markers and crypts are a big business, as are “perpetual care cemeteries.” So is the industry of naming every road (or portion of road), highway, school building, bridge or public work after someone of which few have ever heard.
All of this talk of “creating a legacy” is vanity.
All the things of this present world shall pass away and be remembered no more.
“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?”
—2 Peter 3:10-12
Don’t waste your time trying to erect legacies in this world. The legacies of this world will not endure, neither will they last.
Lay up your treasure in heaven, where it is safe and where it will last.
“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
