“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”
—2 Peter 3:10
Much of what passes for local news is the accounts of men exalting other men.
This is the conceit of the world: that what men build or do will last or be remembered. And they labor long and hard to ensure that someone, ANYONE, will remember their works after they have left this world.
To this end, they use
- Statues.
- Memorials.
- Halls and Walls of Fame.
- Buildings, bridges and roadways.
- Histories and biographies.
The Bible declares that this world will pass away and not be remembered. Nothing that has happened in this world–no matter how large or important it may seem to those who were involved at the moment–will ever come to mind of those who have eternal life.
And all of the statues; all of the memorials and mechanisms erected by men; all of the puny efforts of man to “make his mark” will be lost forever.
No one will remember, not one of the men honored by the world, will come to memory.
100 years, 200 years, 1000 years: they are ages and ages to man.
These lengths of time are nothing to God Almighty.
“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
—2 Peter 3:8
“For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.”
—Psalm 90:4
THE WORLD GLORIFIES ITS OWN
The world will exalt its own. The world will not exalt God nor any men of God.
The world hates Jesus. The world hates God. The world hates the people of God. That is why friendship with the world makes a man an enemy of God.
“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
—James 4:4
IF the world has lifted up a man and given him glory, that man is not of God. IF the man was truly of God, the world would hate that man. This applies to men who are honored by the world as “great men of God.”
“If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.”
—John 15:19
The world exalts and honors and glorifies it’s own.
But it is futile and a vanity: none of the many men promoted by the world will ever be remembered.
Yet men will continue right up until the time Jesus returns to erect statues, to carve memorials and to attempt to achieve fame beyond the grave.
Their works are works of futility.
Those who labor for the acclaim of the world toil in vain. They will neither be honored or remembered.
“For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”
—Isaiah 65:17
Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation
THE GOSPEL
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
