God’s Promises Are True: To Both Believers and Unbelievers

NEW JERUSALEM: The believer's eventual destination.
NEW JERUSALEM: The believer’s eventual destination.

“The voice of weeping shall be no more heard.”

Isaiah 65:19

The promises of God to believers are magnificent and many.

The promises of God concerning unbelievers are also many–though the unbelieving do not believe either set of promises.

“In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:”
2 Thessalonians 1:8

Because they do not believe in a final judgment, they think they have somehow evaded the justice of God.  Because some have not been struck down dead in their tracks, they believe they are able to do as they please in this world with impunity.

Yes, they may have the things of this world: money, stuff and more stuff.

But are they happy?

Most would admit: no.

At best, they are merely passing the time in this life, moving from disappointment to disappointment; hoping that one of the days they have anticipated FINALLY lives up to its never-seem-to-be-fulfilled promises.

Still more unsettling for them: God reveals enough of Himself to keep them uneasy, though their hearts be hard as stone.

“according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”
Romans 12:3

Regardless of what they insist; regardless of what they keep telling themselves, the creation of God testifies against their unbelief.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
Psalm 19:1

God’s promises are true: both to believers and to unbelievers.

So, to believers: keep believing.

“He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it.”
Isaiah 25:8

“For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”
Revelation 7:17

To unbelievers: perhaps it’s time to start looking at the alternatives to what you’ve been telling yourself?

There’s still time to change course: nothing is set in stone.

Except a sure judgment for unbelief.

THE GOSPEL

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

Justice Delayed: The Lord Will Recompense

VENGEANCE IS MINE: The Lord will recompense.
VENGEANCE IS MINE: The Lord will recompense.

“Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.”
Proverbs 20:22

One of the themes which continue from Old to New Testament is that the Lord, in His time, will repay all manner of slights and injustices suffered by believers.

God’s Word continually promises that judgment is a surety.  It may seem slow, as men reckon time, but justice WILL be served.

“The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.”
Psalm 58:10

“For many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of them also: and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands.”
Jeremiah 25:14

“To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.”
Deuteronomy 32:35

“Now is the end come upon thee, and I will send mine anger upon thee, and will judge thee according to thy ways, and will recompense upon thee all thine abominations. And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.”
Ezekiel 7:3-4

“If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.”
Deuteronomy 32:41

“Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;”
2 Thessalonians 1:6

“For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.”
Isaiah 63:4

“And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.”
Ezekiel 23:49

“For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.”
Hebrews 10:30

“And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen, such as they have not heard.”
Micah 5:15

“God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.”
Nahum 1:2

This promise of “a sure vengeance delayed” is a cause of great mirth by mockers and scoffers, who are unfortunately mired in unbelief. But the Lord promises he will recompense and He advises believers to be patient and wait on Him.

“In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:”
2 Thessalonians 1:8

The total unbelief of the world is the reason the whole world howls and mourns when they see Jesus returning. Many unbelievers have seen evidence of illegitimate supernatural power and believe that is all there is.

They NEVER believed they would see the day that an “imaginary God” (to their deceived way of thinking) would come back and hold them accountable.

“Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.”
Isaiah 13:6

“And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
Matthew 24:30

Though God asks that believers walk by faith and not by sight (and though God will not give a sign to the unbelieving), He does give believers various signs throughout their lives so they can KNOW that His Word is true.

And so it is with recompense and vengeance.

The world understands the concept of “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

But they mistakenly believe that the judgment delayed from an eternal God is no judgment at all.

“But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”
2 Peter 3:8-9

The believer may rest assured that God will repay. Occasionally, the judgment is swift; many times, not.

But it will be at the time of HIS choosing.

“Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
Romans 12:19
