“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
The whole world is dark and wicked.
“And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”
—1 John 5:19
In the midst of this dark and evil world, the true believer is to provide a beacon of light to the lost.
“That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;”
Even though believers are beacons of light in a dark world, pointing the world to the narrow way to eternal life, the world hates them for it.
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Because they are hated by the world, true Christians are persecuted. In fact, this persecution is one way to identify the true believer.
“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
—2 Timothy 3:12
True Christians will also suffer much tribulation.
“Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”
Tribulation and persecution in this life is one sure way to know the true believer.
In spite of the sure certainty of persecution and tribulation, the true believer is to shine the light of Jesus; offering hope to a dead and darkened world.
This is not a suggestion: it is a command.
“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:”
Christians are only sojourners, pilgrims, strangers: traveling through this world on the way to the next. As they journey through this dying world, they are to shine the light of Jesus Christ.
Shining as lights in a dark, evil world is one of the most important tasks an end times Christian can perform.
“Ye are the light of the world.”
Are you walking in the darkness or the light of Jesus?
Does the world notice your distinct difference?
Are you hated by the world?
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.”
