7 CHRISTMAS OBSERVATIONS
One Christian’s Thoughts on the Christmas Season
A few observations about this Christmas season, the time of the year when Americans are most likely to honor with their lips–if only for a moment or two–Jesus Christ. Some thoughts about a time known as Christmas in a country known as the United States of America.
“Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
—Matthew 15:7-9
1- A popular saying at this time of the year among Americans who wish to wear the label of “Christian” is: “Jesus is the reason for the season.” This writer has perhaps seen this slogan more the last two years than in all of the previous Christmas seasons together.
“Jesus is the reason for the season.”
Yet those who proclaim this motto seem to do it most frequently while out shopping for gifts, waiting in line or after some particularly-egregious tale of excessive spending.
“Yes, I probably shouldn’t have spent all that money on that 85-inch HD TV, but you know, you only live once. And we all know Jesus is the reason for the season, so…”
Jesus is on their lips, but their actions and preparations speak something else: Santa Claus, eating and drinking, Black Friday shopping sprees. And if there is time, perhaps a Christmas service–if it doesn’t last too long (after all, the family is coming by and…).
“Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:”

2- IF anyone raises the issue of the amount of time, money and effort spent on gifts and get-togethers VS the time spent on Jesus Christ, they are met with “What are you? Some kind of Scrooge? Lighten up.”
For a holiday season which is claimed to be centered on Jesus Christ, Our Saviour sure gets very little attention.
“And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.”
—Ezekiel 33:31
3- For a solid month or more, many stores in the USA play songs associated with Christmas over their in-store sound systems. It has taken forty or fifty years, but the songs which are publicly played are all secular songs. The best one can hope for is a traditional hymn or two played on the day before Christmas–if that.
Red-nosed reindeer, rocking Christmas trees, Santa Claus coming to town, poor Grandma getting run over by a reindeer, silver bells and the breathy “Santa Baby” predominate.
Songs about Our Saviour, Jesus Christ?
Nope, not going to hear them. But what else can one expect during Christmas in America?
“And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer. Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues. For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.”
—Psalm 78:35-37
4- Christmas is NOT the birthday of Jesus Christ.
And even if it was, the Bible does not consider the birthday a day worthy of celebration. There’s a reason the Bible is mostly silent on the day in which our Savior came into this world: birthdays are NOT days Christians should celebrate.
Birthdays are days noted mostly by those who are born once.
Birthdays: A Day of Celebration for Those Born Once
Yes, we understand that Christmas is a pagan holiday. Yes, we also understand that almost all rituals and traditions associated with Christmas are pagan in origin.
Worse than pagan, some of the most “beloved” Christmas fables are occult. Santa Claus is an elf. Elves are demons. The names of Santa’s reindeer are pagan gods. Which the Bible says are demons.
Christmas is the one season all year when Satan receives plenty of worship: you can’t spell Santa without the S-A-T-A-N.
5- After all that said in the previous note, Christmas is the one day of the year when the world takes notice of Jesus Christ, IF ONLY in hypocrisy; IF ONLY to misrepresent Him.
Christmas Day is perhaps the only day when a true Christian can lift up a prayer to Jesus and perhaps be joined by another American.
Unlike the other 364 days of the year.
6- Over the last seven or eight years, the very contrived, very artificial “War on Christmas” has been “raging.” What is the WoC about?
THE CLAIM: The forces of evil (secularism) are changing “Merry Christmas” into “Happy Holidays.” This is supposed to signal that government/business/whatever is trying to take “Christ” out of “Christmas.” So American who wear the label of “Christians” can fight back by saying “Merry Christmas!”
IF they would think about it for just a moment, Americans long ago took the Christ out of Christmas. The holiday itself has been an excuse for excess for decades. Yes, many do make an appearance at a church, but seriously? Is this to honor Jesus Christ–or to make themselves feel better? IF it was to honor Jesus Christ, more would do it every day in a serious manner–instead of once or twice a year when it is convenient and part of a secular celebration.
Jesus Himself would likely not want His Name associated with the annual Season of Greed.
But many go about proclaiming “Merry Christmas!” They are convinced by doing this, they are being holy, exhibiting their “Christianity” and subversively undermining the evil atheists in the bargain–and it makes them feel good.
Just by saying “Merry Christmas.”
The War on Christmas is a phoney war; a fraud, a secular invention, created in order to make the lost and apostates feel like they really are genuine Christians. IF ONLY for a few days or so.
The same goes for the evil atheists. There are very few people apostates can feel morally superior to. Atheists are one of these groups. Therefore, atheists (many who are professional atheists) make a tremendous show of force around Christmas–just to remind the hopelessly lost that there are people out there more wretched than they are.
7- Lastly, if there is one season of the year that the gospel is shared less than any other, it would have to be Christmas. There are many Bible verses shared during Christmas.
But very, very few of those verses are 1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

The gospel is the reason Jesus Christ came to earth: to save all those who would put their trust in Him for eternal salvation. IF Jesus is the reason for the season, the gospel is the reason Jesus came to earth.
It’s a shame the gospel is barely heard during the Christmas season.
But then, it is America.
CHRISTMAS WISHES:
- Pray for wisdom.
- Pray for discernment.
- Pray for the lost.
- Be obedient.
- Perhaps most importantly: pray not to be deceived.
