GROVES AND HIGH PLACES: Groves in the Most Christian Country on Earth

“For they also built them high places, and images, and groves, on every high hill, and under every green tree. And there were also sodomites in the land: and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel.
—1 Kings 14:23-24

Groves were one of the places the Bible records the worshiping of idols, pagan gods, demons and devils.

So it stands to reason that there would be an abundance of places in the USA (The Most Christian Country on Earth Ever!™) named after these outdoor pagan worship centers.

And so there is.

It all began with a recent discussion centered around the number of places in the USA named after groves. Neither person could even guess how many such places existed.

The number is surprising.

The count: 710 places in America which have “Grove” in their name. This is roughly 90+ percent of all the Grove place names in the entire English-speaking world.

What a coincidence!

This is by no means an exhaustive list.

Tennessee is likely the state where such places are most popular, with Texas, West Virginia and Pennsylvania close behind.

One list has the number of Grove place names in the USA at over 1420 and it didn’t count any names with less than two places. (This is more than twice the number on our list, though our list included only official names of places). Another list had over 900.

Did we miss any?

There’s power to be had worshiping in the groves and high places.

• It is a relatively weak power;
• It is a dark, selfish power;
• It is a very temporary, earthly power; and,
• It is a power which comes at an extremely high cost: health, happiness, deception and eternal condemnation.

Some people adapt to most any situation, while convincing themselves they are happy. Why settle when you can have true peace and happiness?
