Quite a few people still associate idol worship with primitive pagans. In a way, they are right, with many of these primitives walking among us.
Concerning those who cannot understand why men would bow down to a rock or a piece of wood, it all has to do with demonic power: behind every rock, stone and piece of wood or metal worshiped, there is a demon.
“But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.”
–1Corinthians 10:20-21
Men worship the pieces of rock, stone and metal because this is one way illegitimate supernatural power is accessed. In short, they worship idols because idol worship (in the short term) works for them.
Associations with demons will eventually lead to illness, death and destruction (no matter what ‘assurances’ the deceived worshiper might have to the contrary). Idols are the material representation of the demonic force behind such images: men can SEE and touch an idol.
Those without faith can only walk by sight, not faith.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight:”
–2Corithians 5:7
Idols are a necessary crutch for those lacking faith. Such sight-walkers NEED idols precisely because they have no faith.
But God Almighty has declared such temptations off limits for men (and all who access such demonic power pay a heavy price for their weak tea power trips; both in this life and the next).
Still, men are seduced by such parlor tricks and trinkets as are offered by the demonic. And so they exchange their eternities for a few laughs here on earth.
Too bad.
Their idols = pagan gods = demons/devils = familiar spirits can’t save them, but such men are made to feel like they are “special” because they have to work to obtain “secret knowledge” in order to access such magic.
The day is soon coming when all such idols (and what they represent) will be thrown overboard in a vain attempt to deny any association with them.
“In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats; To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.”
–Isaiah 2:20-21
When that day comes, it will be too late.
However, today there’s still time to change directions.
