THREE YEARS AGO

MARTYRS: REAL AND FALSE

As we approach the climax of human history, words will continue to be misused.

The misuse of the word “martyr” is particularly egregious.

Syrian army seals Damascus; prepares ‘martyrs’ – (h/t:T)  Complete misuse of the term “martyrs.”

The word “martyr” literally means “witness” in Greek.  It originally meant those who were willing to lay down their lives as a witness for Jesus.  Of course, the world does appropriate this term for its own uses (like in this headline).

Suicide bombers and soldiers are not martyrs.  They are not witnesses: they are combatants in worldly wars.

That concept of “martyr” is so foreign in America churches these days.  Church folk love Jesus–unless they’re asked to die for Him.  Most American church-goers won’t even entertain the idea.

Love, one supposes, does have its limits.

“I’m intended for much greater things! Be reasonable: Would a loving Jesus ask that? That’s not for me.  Jesus wouldn’t ask me to die for Him!“

Like so many other Christians have done over the centuries.

Like so many are doing right this minute around the world: 500 per day, by some estimates.

Every three minutes, someone in the world is laying down their life because of their faith in Jesus Christ.  Depending upon how fast the reader reads, 1, 2, even 3 people will have died as a witness for Jesus Christ in the time it takes to read this little piece.

These Christians are putting their money where their mouth is. But the American churches think these people who are demonstrating the ultimate love for Jesus are losers. That’s for second-tier Christians who don’t measure up.  That’s for Christians who don’t know any better.

That’s for the ones who will be left behind.

“If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:”

“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”

IF those who are “beheaded for a witness of Jesus” supposedly “convert during a tribulation period”

AND

IF the “tribulation period is entirely a period of wrath not to be experienced by Christians” (as is commonly taught)

AND

IF the wrath of God is reserved exclusively for His enemies (Nahum 1:2)

THEN

“Living and reigning with Christ” seems an unusual way for God to reward His enemies.

If those who frequent the churches are not purposed in their hearts NOW-–when times are still relatively good–-to what extent they will suffer and/or die if need be for the gospel, then when the time comes, their flesh will be able to talk them into doing things they couldn’t imagine that they’d do.

“God knows my heart.  He knows that I’m not really denying Jesus.  I’ll make it right later.  I’ll make it right the next time. How can God want me to die?  No!  I need to figure this out.  I’ll repent later.”

“Martyrs.”  It’s a reality everywhere in the world but in America.

For now.

“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”

Jesus wasn’t talking about finding or retaining “life” in this world.

HELL: WHO WILL BE THERE?

Most people do not think much about hell.

Little wonder: it’s not a very nice neighborhood.

Perhaps that’s why so many fables are constructed about a place God’s Word declares will be the final resting place for many.

One of the biggest fables about hell is that it will be filled with the most evil people ever born. Many believe the “wicked” are the most evil ever. But the Bible also calls those who are wicked “foolish.”

Most people compare themselves to Adolph Hitler or Ted Bundy and then say “I’m a pretty good person.”

“Every way of a man is right in his own eyes”

Of course hell will be full of unbelievers, BUT…

Hell will be full of people who are NICE.

Hell will be full of pleasant people.

Hell will be full of those who spent much time smiling and shaking hands.

Hell will be packed with church folks.

ESPECIALLY church folks.
