“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.”
A THANKSGIVING PLANNED BUT NOT CELEBRATED
Sometimes it is good to remember not to get too wrapped up in the things of this world; that this world is the source of much sorrow.
This was brought into focus recently when an acquaintance traveled across the country to see a member of the family. Not having seen each other for over 12 years, plans were made and one of the plans was for the two family members to spend Thanksgiving together.
With that in mind, the acquaintance went shopping and procured the necessary food items to make a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. It would have been the first Thanksgiving dinner celebrated by the two family members in decades.
Alas, it was not to be.
An argument broke out–over what was never clearly determined–and the acquaintance left suddenly for a trip back across the country.
The food was left in the refrigerator of the family member where it mostly still sits, the Thanksgiving dinner now nothing more than an afterthought.
The acquaintance had placed much store in making that dinner.
The family member was also filled with anticipation.
BOTH had spoken fondly of it–even though it had not occurred yet.
But it was not to be.
The world is filled with millions of such sad little stories.
Those in the world would do well to remember that this life is a vapor, soon to pass.
“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.”
YET, most still place their trust and faith in the things of this world: their family or spouses, their job, their physical health, their network of friends, acquaintances and business associates.
Yes, it would do the world well to remember that this world of sorrow will soon pass away, never to be remembered by those who come afterward.
IF ONLY more would keep that in mind: Remember this life is a fleeting vapor.
However, that is unlikely to happen.
IF it DID happen, it’s supposed there would have been one more Thanksgiving dinner celebration this coming week.
“For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.”
—1 Chronicles 29:15
There is still time to change direction (repent) and place one’s trust in Almighty God.
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:”
—2 Corinthians 4:3
