In chapters 2 and 3 of the Book of Revelation (of Jesus Christ), the apostle John is directed to write seven letters to seven different churches in Asia Minor: one each to the churches in Ephesus, Pergamos, Smyrna, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea.
The letters (from Jesus Christ) contain mostly warnings, along with several commendations.
Many pieces have been written comparing America to the church at Laodicea.
However, could the letter to the church at Sardis been speaking to those who sit in the buildings Americans call “churches“?
“And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God. Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. Thou hast a few names even in Sardis which have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.
“He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.”
—Revelation 3:1-6
Could the above have been warning America?
Upon further reflection (and some discussion), the answer likely is “Sadly, no.”
While there are several similarities between Sardis and America, there is one very big difference. While Sardis at one point was a Christian Church (and has things ” which remain, that are ready to die“), America has always been a haven of pagans and the occult.
While many can list “good things” (according to men and man’s traditions), the truthful reader will be hard-pressed to name anything which still “remains.”
However, modern-day Americans (who still have ears to hear) may still profit from the warnings given to the church at Sardis.
IS the reader uneasy about the future?
PERHAPS the reader has placed his faith for the future in one of the modern-day churches?
THERE is still time left to change direction (repent) and call upon the name of the LORD.
Is your calling and election sure?
Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation
THE GOSPEL
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
