“A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.”
–Ecclesiastes 7:1
Though it sounds foreign to modern ears–which are used to the supreme exaltation of SELF; hence the modern emphasis on one’s birthday–the Bible declares that the day of death is better than the day of birth.
The day of a good and faithful man’s death is better than the day of his birth; for his death puts an end to those miseries which his birth begins, and opens that more perfect happiness, of which the present life is not capable.
–Bishop Hall (quoted in the British Family Bible)
“Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.”
–Jeremiah 20:14
Many of the church folk will protest.
“What’s the harm?” “It’s just a little fun!”
Many of those who inhabit the buildings we call “churches” play a mean game of “Hath God said?” without actually using the words “Hath God said?”
Again, to those who place their faith and trust in this world and the things of this world, these sentiments from God’s Word sound ghastly. This applies to all those who focus their attention on this present world and the things of this world.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him”
–1John 2:15
The believer’s death day better than his birthday
As death to a good man is more advantageous than life, so to a wise man the contemplation of the former is more desirable than all the enjoyments of the latter.
–Bishop Atterbury (quoted in the British Family Bible)
When man lives this life as though it is only a passing test, he not only loses his fear of death, he puts life and death in their proper perspective.
“O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?”
–1Corinthians 15:55
Celebrating one’s day of birth is vanity. Why not celebrate being alive on August 15 every year?
One’s death, however, should be a promotion from this test on earth to an eternal reward.
HAS the reader placed his emphasis on his birthday and the things of this world?
There’s still time to repent, call on God and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
