Even So, Come, Lord Jesus: Looking to the Return of Jesus Christ

Last Judgment

“I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
–Revelation 22:16-19

“He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
–Revelation 22:20

The Bible assures us (and believers see the scorn and unbelief of the world rise around them) that the great majority of mankind will NOT be looking forward to the return of Jesus Christ.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

This is the way the Book of Revelation ends.

This is also the way the New Testament ends.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

Even though the day of the Lord’s return will be horrific to the foolish and wicked men (almost all of humanity), believers are to be looking toward that long-awaited return.

“For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.”
–Jeremiah 46:10

Believers are to be looking forward to the day of Jesus’ return.

EVEN THOUGH the Old Testament (Amos 5:18) warned those in Israel (who fancied themselves righteous) of this day.

“Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light. As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him. Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?”

So it will be on the day of Jesus’ return: many will cry “Lord, Lord” and Jesus will say to them, “I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

LORD, LORD: Who is Crying Lord, Lord?

The warning in Amos makes the ending phrase in Revelation 22 even more important.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

As one commentator put it:

[Jesus] seems now, after he has been discovering these things to his people on earth, to take leave of them, and return to heaven; but he parts with them in great kindness, and assures them it shall not be long before he comes again to them: Behold, I come quickly. As when he ascended into heaven, after his resurrection, he parted with a promise of his gracious presence, so here he parts with a promise of a speedy return.
[…]
If any say,

“Where is the promise of his coming, when so many ages have passed since this was written?”

let them know he is not slack to his people, but long-suffering to his enemies: his coming will be sooner than they are aware, sooner than they are prepared, sooner than they desire; and to his people it will be seasonable.
Matthew Henry’s Commentary on the Whole Bible

Once again, the Bible assures us (and believers can see the unbelief of the world surrounding them) that the great majority of mankind will NOT be looking forward to the return of Jesus Christ. In fact, the world will be surprised, astounded and TERRIFIED of that day.

“Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”

Believers who obey the commands of God Almighty and His Son, Jesus Christ, have nothing to fear from the day of the LORD.

Everyone else?

…will be quaking in their shoes.

IS the reader ready for the day of the LORD?

OR, does the reader try to reassure himself that there is “plenty of time” before that day arrives?

It is not yet too late: there is still time to repent, place your faith for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
