“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
–1John 2:15
Consider the American lawn.
What an odd object of adoration: a small patch of dirt and grass?!!?
It is an apt–but odd–example of the manner in which the things of the world can grow on a man’s mind until they occupy it entirely.
Once upon a time there was a land called the United States of America.
In this land, the people worshiped many things of the world. Some of those people even worshiped their LAWN.
While this might appear strange or odd to some, to others it is quite a normal state of affairs.
Most know the man who is obsessed with his lawn. He has many rituals he performs to ensure that it is a pleasure for passersby to look upon.
This man works on his lawn, fusses over his lawn, reads up on lawn care tips, talks to store personnel about how to better maintain his lawn–and talks about his lawn (his pride and joy) to all he meets.
A lot.
Many are aware of the stereotype of American suburbia: how the suburbanites comes out of their perfect houses on Saturday mornings, fire up their push- and riding-lawn mowers to trim and cut their lawns.
NOW, there is nothing wrong in wanting to provide for the physical needs of one’s loved ones.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to provide a safe and comfortable space for one’s children to play.
BUT when the focus becomes the lawn and the idea of the lawn itself, then one’s children and loved ones are pushed to the rear. Then the lawn becomes an object of adoration and concern.
The trick is to have one’s lawn be a servant to one’s needs–instead of the lawn turning one into a slave over the lawn’s maintenance and care.
The idea that the lawn takes precedence over one’s family can be proven by those who put their lawns ahead of various “unimportant” family events.
Perhaps no other society has ever put such emphasis on the status and maintenance of one’s lawn.
A patch of dirt and grass which is really such a trifle in the whole entire scheme of things.
How VERY sad that such a trifle will be one of the things of the world to which some will cling to when times grow dark.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”
–1John 2:15-17
DOES the reader know someone who values their lawn over all else in their life?
DOES the reader have something in his life which he has elevated above many other things?
DOES the reader have something in his life which he has elevated above God Almighty and His Son, Jesus Christ?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
