CHRISTIANITY AND RELIGION: Important Differences Between the Two

Christianity or religion: a choice

MUCH has been written (and spoken) about Christianity being a religion.

Christianity is NOT a religion.

This is because there are several important differences between Christianity and religion.

Here are a few of the most distinguishing aspects between the two.

[NOTE: In the 48 or so hours since this was written, a conversation with a local man who a practitioner of an Eastern religion ensued. The topic arose about the difference between Christianity and the other religions. When it was pointed out that Christianity believes man is not good or that man can be made good through his own efforts, the local man agreed that these were important differences between Christianity and religions: “Well, that’s right, it’s hard to get any more black and white than that.”]

1- Religions flatter man by telling him he is really a good guy and if ONLY he will follow that particular religion, he will become good in the eyes of other men.

Christianity explains that man is evil.

ALL men.

There are NO good men.

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
–Romans 3:10-12

Naturally, man does not want to hear that he is not a good person.

2- Therefore, religions are vastly more popular than true Christianity. (The churches which are so prevalent are religions, not true Christianity).

Christianity is about the few. Religion is about the many.

“Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
–Matthew 7:13-14

Again, man likes to be flattered.  He wants to hear he is a good man or that, if he will only work at it, he will become a good man.

3- Religions offer a plan, a program, wisdom, or some other way for man to make himself better. Christianity tells man “You are evil; You cannot make yourself better. It is your nature. The only way you can enter into the kingdom of heaven is to be reborn with a new nature.

Man can do nothing on his own to be reborn.

Man can do nothing on his own.

God Almighty does it all to all who believe on Jesus Christ.

“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
–John 3:3

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
–2Corinthians 5:17

“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.”
–Galatians 6:15

4- Religions teach their adherents how to get “closer to (their) god“–IF they believe in a god. Christianity teaches that God is basically unknowable, but he will share certain facets of his being with certain of mankind who put their trust in Him, His Son Jesus Christ and God’s Word.

5- Man chooses to be a part of a particular religion.

In Christianity, man does not choose to be a true Christian: he is chosen.

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”
–Ephesians 1:4-7

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”
-–1Peter 2:9-10

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
