“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
–1John 2:15
Modern life consists largely of the things of the world.

The Bible warns “all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
After all, what is modern life, if not the recognition, pursuit and continuous satisfaction of “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life”?
LUST OF THE FLESH: the appetites of the flesh: for food; for drink; for carnal pleasure; for sloth; for amusement and relaxation; for other distractions which satisfy man’s fleshly hungering. But also for other, more apparently wholesome pursuits: family, friends, sports, books, etc. Any appetite, the satisfaction of which becomes more important than God Almighty can be classified as a “thing of the world“–or an idol.
LUST OF THE EYES: The thing which is seen, then desired. In modern life this would include cars and/or trucks, houses, businesses, things which are saved, things which are collected, electronics–whatever the eye sees and the soul wants. Another word for the lust of the eyes is “covetousness.”
PRIDE OF LIFE: the acclaim of the world: honors, control, recognition, legacies, power, wealth for wealth’s sake (or the recognition which comes from one controlling great wealth). The desire to “be somebody.”
Most of modern life is based upon the satisfaction of one or more of these three things of the world.
Coincidentally, these three things of the world are the basis of all sin.
“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
–1John 2:16

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
