Book of Psalms: Soothing Verses for Troubled Times

Psalms

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”
–Psalm 55:22

Several years ago, an acquaintance, who is a fairly zealous member of an idol-worshiping false religion, made a startling statement–at least to those familiar with the man.

“I enjoy reading the Book of Psalms. It brings me peace when I am agitated. Actually, I like reading Psalms and often read them.”

This was surprising because previously, the man had never, EVER mentioned anything being of any benefit except the words of his Eastern religion.

The Book of Psalms is very much a book which covers a LOT of ground. There are many chapters in Psalms: 150 of them, to be exact; i.e., 150 different Psalms.

Psalm 119 is the longest, containing 176 verses.

Although most know the Psalms to be “praises of God,” (which they are), they offer much more.

They contain nuggets of wisdom about daily life, prophecies about the times in which we live, prophecies about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and reminders of God’s power and promises–as well as soothing word pictures which can calm and quiet the distraught.

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.

Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.

Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.”
–Psalm 91

To the believer, Psalms offers constant reminders of God’s many promises–including God’s supernatural peace which he promises to believers.

To non-believers, Psalms provides a preview of the type of peaceful calm available to all those who trade the trinkets of this present world for the surety of the kingdom of heaven.

While King David wrote many of the psalms, he did not write them all.

Probably the best-known Psalm is by David.  It is a mere six verses: Psalm Twenty-Three.

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.”

The reader would do well to study the Book of Psalms.

He may even find peace in a time of trouble.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
