The World’s Wisdom: Dying and Death

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment”
–Hebrews 9:27

What the world says about a person’s dying tells the listener a LOT about what the world finds important.

And ABOVE ALL, the things the world finds important either 1-have to do with this life–which is only a shadow;

“Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.”
–Psalm 144:4

OR 2- are what the world WISHES were true; i.e., an escape from judgment or a pleasant little word picture to sooth the uncertainty which men feel as death approaches.

With this in mind, a collection of ten bits of the world’s wisdom about death is offered to the reader, as well as one BONUS quote from God’s Word (to show the contrast in thinking between the world and the believer).

“No one is actually dead until the ripples they cause in the world pass away.”
Terry Platchett

“If life must not be taken too seriously, then so neither must death.”
-—Samuel Butler

“We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone.”
Orson Welles

“How can the dead be truly dead when they still live in the souls of those who are left behind?”
-—Carson McCullers

“He that lives upon hope will die fasting.”
Benjamin Franklin

“I would rather die a meaningful death than to live a meaningless life.”
Corazon Acquino

“You needn’t die happy when your time comes, but you must die satisfied, for you have lived your life from the beginning to the end.”
Stephen King

“Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.”
Horace Mann

“It is the secret of the world that all things subsist and do not die, but retire a little from sight and afterwards return again.”
-—Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Some may never live, but the crazy never die.”
Hunter S. Thompson

“A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.”
–Ecclesiastes 7:1

DOES the reader believe that his choices made while alive have nothing to do with what happens after death?

DOES the reader believe that there will be no judgment after death?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?

DOES the reader believe he is NOT saved?

Time is Running Out: Today is the Day of Salvation

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
