FORBIDDEN BECAUSE OF UNFRIENDLINESS?
“There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
–Deuteronomy 18:10-12
Several topics of interest were touched upon during a recent, far-ranging discussion with someone whose family has had a long history of witchcraft.
One such topic was the great number of witches who healed their neighbors and often assisted them in gaining a bountiful harvest, better butter and other small, yet important, matters . Often, these practitioners were not called witches by their neighbors. They were called cunning folk and/or wise women or wise men or the “wise ones” or a similar title.
Another topic discussed was those who were usually punished as witches.
These were usually women (or men) who did not get along with their neighbors. When their neighbors suffered unlikely catastrophes, the local witch immediately became a prime suspect.
One reason the cunning folk were rarely rounded up for witchcraft was they were seen as benevolent by their neighbors. They were seen as a benefit to the community: instead being seen as causing misfortune, they were looked upon as helpers.
Now, make no mistake: the cunning folk often used the same methods and entities as did the witches. BUT, as they were seen as helpful (rather than hurtful), they were rarely prosecuted.
Lastly, the topic of why the Bible forbids witchcraft and sorcery was touched upon.
The Bible forbids ALL activity which involves familiar (evil or unclean) spirits (otherwise known as devils or demons).
Unlike man, God’s Word does not condemn witchcraft and those accessing illegitimate supernatural power because they are not friendly or because they seemingly lack a benevolence to others who live nearby.
It condemns them because they are using spiritual means which have been expressly forbidden by God’s Word.
And they are not only engaging in forbidden practices, they do so–even those who appear to work their “magic” for others–for their own selfish ends.
DOES the reader believe that witches, sorcerers and others who employ familiar spirits are necessarily unfriendly?
DOES the reader find it hard to believe that many folks who are “nice” might be engaged in practices forbidden by God’s Word?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
