“The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.”
–Proverbs 20:29
There is a great deal of difference in what the Bible says about old men and old women and what a culture which relentlessly worships youth has to say.
“The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness.”
–Proverbs 16:31
We live in a time and place which places a tremendous amount of importance on being young. And not just on being young, but on the PHYSICAL attributes of the young; on the APPEARANCE of youth–and particular emphasis appears to be on those who are older focusing on the PHYSICAL qualities of the youth.

God’s Word is quite complimentary about those who survive until old age. The worldly emphasis on youthful looks and abilities contrasts with the Bible’s emphasis on those who are older who have acquired more wisdom–something the world pretty much ignores in the elderly. A sign of this wisdom acquired over a person’s years is gray hair.
“The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.”
–Proverbs 20:29
“Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God”
–Leviticus 19:32
The Bible looks upon the aged as assets to their community. Too often, the culture in which we live looks at the elderly as a burden; as a recipient of promises made when they were younger which are troublesome and annoying to fulfill now that they are older; of a storehouse, not of knowledge and wisdom, but of money and other wealth to be distributed among those who can better use and appreciate such things: the middle-aged and youth.
“Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.”
–1TIMOTHY 5:1-2
God’s Word frames the discussion about the elderly by focusing on their advantages: wisdom and experience, knowledge and understanding.
Another advantage older men and women have: they seem to be less inclined to be carried away by emotions and the sin of the moment. This unemotional level head of older people contribute to their wisdom–as opposed to the world’s emphasis on looks, a great body and those things which are held to be important by the world.
What older people find important is usually much different than what the youth value.
“Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.”
–Proverbs 17:6
It is not only unfortunate the worldly adore youth culture to such a degree, it is short-sighted. After all, everyone grows older every single day. Those who shunt the elderly off to the side and trample them today will be those who get trampled tomorrow.
So while the worldly worry and fret about “getting older,” those who are biblically-minded spend their time accumulating wisdom.
Part of that wisdom is the recognition that many older people are an asset rather than a burden.
What does the reader find important about those who are older?
The answer will reveal whether the reader spends time ogling “sexy Grandma” or pondering those things which contribute to the wisdom of the ages.
“With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.”
–Job 12:12

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
