This Life is Hell: Ten Quotes

One of the deceptions offered by this world is the one which claims that there is no hell for those judged wicked, evil or foolish by God.

Sometimes, these claims will offer “There is no hell.  Hell is this life on earth.”

However, God’s Word is very clear: while this life will present a host of challenges–particularly for the wicked–this present life is nothing like hell, a place of eternal torment and judgment.

With all of this in mind, we offer ten quotes about this life being hell.

“The return from your work must be the satisfaction which that work brings you and the world’s need of that work. With this, life is heaven, or as near heaven as you can get. Without this — with work which you despise, which bores you, and which the world does not need — this life is hell.”
W.E.B. DuBois

“I know this might not be much comfort when we’re still caught here in “hell” (and this life is hell in the sense we are here to learn some difficult lessons), but our friends and family members who have passed over are all happy where they are!”
Sylvia Browne

“This is the premise of the Christian Bible. If the Book of Life includes your name, you’ll be in heaven. Otherwise, it’s off to hell. Hell is namelessness and eternal pain is defined as a perpetual suspension between a signifier and a referent. That’s why, as Christopher Marlowe, Mel Brooks and Jacques Derrida all conclude, this life is hell.”
Susan Leigh Foster

“We are trapped in hell. Earth is actually hell.”
Justin Roiland

“Hell is no fable, for this life IS hell.”

“Mankind’s enjoyment of God’s ‘rest’ was over…to be banished from God’s presence and to be given over to one’s own sinful desires in this life is ‘hell on earth.”
Jeff Wisdom

“Repeating what others have written and said my mind is gloomy. Until I open my soul and with my own words can have the glory of expression in endless variety, this life is hell.”
M. Gopala Krishna Adiga

“Hell isn’t a place. This life is hell.”

“Skeptics who say this are trying to dismiss the reality of hell. They might like to think that life as we know it couldn’t get any worse, but the sufferings in this life will be heaven compared to the suffering in the next life—for those who die in their sins. This life is the closest thing to hell that Christians will ever know, and the closest thing to heaven that sinners will ever know.”
Heaven and Hell

“Sometimes people look at the evil and suffering and loneliness in the world and say, “This life is hell.” Sometimes it is like hell. But other times it’s like heaven”
Bryan Wilkerson, Sermon: Why would a good God send people to hell?

“This life is hell enough and nothing can be worse.”

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
