What is the Significance of 666?

666

A FEW THOUGHTS

“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”
–Revelation 13:16-18

Recently, someone asked a very good question.

“Where did 666 come from?  What is the significance of the number?”

Although the preceding is two different questions, the questioner meant them as one.  One question, with the second as a sort of clarification about what he meant.

This is a good question because, though many understand that 666 is an important end times number, they do not understand anything further.  And in the times in which we now live, the number diminishes daily of those who even understand that 666 is an important end times number.

Perhaps surprisingly, God’s Word does not have much to say (beyond Revelation 13:16-18) about 666.

Therefore, here are a few observations/speculations/thoughts about 666 and its significance in the end times.

1- Regardless of what we know or do not know about the intricacies of 666, the number itself is important because of the information contained in Revelation 13:16-18.  The number 666 (or the “mark of the beast” or the name of the beast or the number of his name) will be used to screen those who want to buy or sell (and to most, the ability to buy or sell means the ability to eat, to survive, to live). This economic system will be put in place by the leader of the world government (the beast) and his “mouth“: the man of sin.

In the world in which we now live, 666 abounds.

BUT, it is not yet a mark/proof of worship of Satan and his beast or proof of who can buy or sell.

2- About the beast, God’s Word informs that

“And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.”
–Revelation 13:5

This “mouth” is the man of sin.

It is the man of sin who implements the system which requires those who wish to buy or sell to have 666 put in their right hand or in their forehead.

3- 666 is the number of a man.

“Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.”
–Revelation 13:18

Among those who claim to decipher the Word of God for the unlearned common folk, 7 is the number of godly perfection and 6 is one short.

Or the number of man, who is short of God.

4- 666 most probably was used in some capacity by the evil worldwide civilization which existed before God destroyed it in the flood.

“And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them.”
–Genesis 6:5-7

“The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.”
–Genesis 6:11

That 666 was used in some capacity by the evil worldwide, demonically-driven world empire before the flood is speculation on the part of this writer.

HOWEVER, that speculation is based on Matthew 24:37 and Luke 17:26.

“But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
–Matthew 24:37

“And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.”
–Luke 17:26

(And yes, we do realize that Matthew 24:37 and Luke 17:26 were specifically referring to the situation of man totally surprised by the sudden onslaught of the flood compared to end times man totally surprised by the sudden appearance of Jesus Christ, But, both Scripture can also be used as a general description of both times.)

Perhaps 666 was needed to buy or sell in the days immediately before Noah and his family entered the ark?

Again, this last thought is only speculation.

5- 666 is the mark of the beast.  The populace needs the mark in order to buy or sell (at least that is what they are told).  BUT the mark (666) is a sign/proof of WORSHIP.  Specifically, the worship of Satan and his beast.  The Corporate Media and the churches have worked long and hard to distract folks from the true significance of 666.  To this end, the “cashless society” has been promoted as a necessity of the mark.  HOWEVER, this places the emphasis on the economic impact of the mark (666) and completely leaves out the WORSHIP component.  ALL who receive the mark will be guilty of worshiping Satan and the image of his beast.

“And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads”
–Revelation 13:14-16

When God sends an angel to warn mankind NOT to take the mark (666), the angel specifically mentions the worship factor–TWICE.

“And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.”
–Revelation 14:9-11

For the reader, the true significance of 666 is fairly easy to ascertain, however.

When the reader sees 666 being used–-particularly as a screening device to enable one to buy or sell AND as a mark that one is a participant in Satan-approved worship–-one can KNOW that the return of Jesus Christ is not far off.

IS the reader curious about the mark of the beast and its number, 666?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

DOES the reader believe he is saved?
