The Mixed Morality of Game of Thrones

swords

The television show, Game of Thrones, is certainly a popular, much-discussed topic these days.

Enter “Game of Thrones” into Google News and the search engine returns 337 MILLION results.

52.5 million of those results are from the last four weeks alone.

The TV show is not only popular, it has been HEAVILY-PROMOTED by the culture, Big Entertainment and Big Media.

Which raises a question:  Perhaps Game of Thrones is so popular BECAUSE it has been so heavily promoted?

And another question: Perhaps Game of Thrones is so popular BECAUSE the public has been relentlessly TOLD it is so popular by the media?

(Of course, when the “number of viewers” is calculated, it includes many who re-watch the show, as well as other inflating factors. These inflated numbers are then used to help promote the show as being some sort of a culture-wide phenomenon.)

The show has run for eight seasons (72 episodes) and is currently on its last season, with its last episode shown last Sunday night.

The show IS entertaining.

But the show is a wild mishmash of morality.

On the MINUS side, the show, from time-to-time, features gratuitous nudity and bad language.

It also portrays fornication, homosexuality, murder, robbery lying/deception and many other sins, as fairly normal/ordinary behaviors and reactions–particularly among those who control people, money and power.

The show also promotes the anti-biblical idea that there are some who are “good people.”

There are NONE good.

“God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, that did seek God. Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
–Psalm 53:2-3

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”
–Romans 3:10-12

The show also promotes “magic” and witchcraft as just one of the various choices which some have made to further their lives/careers.

ON the PLUS side, only one thing comes to mind.

In the second season, an old man who marries his daughters (but no one seems to know what happens to his sons after they are born) is followed taking one of the new-born baby boys into the woods to offer it to the White Walkers, a host of zombie-like creatures.

In return for the baby boys–who are then turned into White Walkers themselves–the White Walkers leave the old man and his family alone.

When this is discovered by the “civilized” Northerners who are staying at the old man’s lodging, MOST of the party react with horror.  This is shown to reinforce the feelings of horror the viewer is, no doubt, also feeling.

It seems the sacrifice of newborn babies, boys or girls, is one thing which most ordinary folks in Game of Thrones believe to be an absolute horror.

Compare that reaction to the reaction of modern Americans who go about their daily business while hundreds of thousands of babies are butchered for the sake of sacrifice/convenience/superstition.

As stated, the show–though it, in many cases, glorifies pagan morality and behavior–does recoil at the sacrifice of baby boys to the zombie-like White Walkers.

Though whether this is due to a real reaction to the baby sacrifices or for dramatic effect is unknown.

Again, as stated, the morality of Game of Thrones is a real muddled mishmash.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

For the Believer, Resistance is NOT Futile

Resist

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
–James 4:7

In popular movies, when the villain is very much stronger than his intended victim, the movie baddie will often exclaim, “Resistance is futile!”

And many times,  the cinema villain is correct: resistance to his power IS futile.

BUT, life is not lived in the movies.

IF one is a believer on Jesus Christ, God’s Word informs us that we CAN successfully resist Satan, our nemesis.

To triumph over Satan–who is much stronger, more clever and smarter than a human–believers must first do two things.

1- Submit to God.

2- Resist the devil (Satan).

IF the first two conditions are met, then the DEVIL WILL FLEE from you.

One point for readers to keep in mind: resisting the devil is not so easy.

The devil (Satan) knows that humans crave comfort. The devil knows humans are basically weak-minded.  The devil knows the vast majority of humans are vain and so do not believe God’s Word.

And so, Satan (the devil) appeals to his intended victim’s craving for comfort.  Satan also works on his intended victim’s mind.  (This is where the intended target might get the idea that “Resistance is futile!“)

The good news is that the more one resists the devil; the more one fights the enemy, the easier it becomes.

A second point for the reader to keep in mind: one must first SUBMIT oneself to God.  This is not so easy for modern man because modern man has been taught that submission is a BAD THING: modern man has been taught that only the weak submit.

HOWEVER, if the reader will submit himself to God and resist the devil, he WILL flee from you.

God’s Word guarantees it.

“Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever.”
–Psalm 119:160

HAS the reader ever resisted the devil?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Hated of All Men For My Name?

hated

“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.”
–Luke 21:17

The believer is assured that he will be hated of all men for Jesus’ sake.

“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”
–Mark 13:13

When God’s Word refers to “all men,” it certainly means ALL men–including those one considers to be “friends” and those of one’s family.

“And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.”
–Matthew 10:36

One way believers may KNOW they are in the kingdom of heaven is by being hated for the name of Jesus Christ.

Believers are also certain they will suffer persecution.

“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
–2TIMOTHY 3:12

Believers are also certain they will experience MUCH tribulation.

“Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.”
–Acts 14:22

In fact, IF the reader is not being persecuted, undergoing tribulation and hated for the name of Jesus, then the reader needs to be taking a VERY SERIOUS look at whether or not he is a Christian.

Or a mere pretender.

“And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”
–Matthew 10:22

IS the reader hated because of the name of Jesus Christ?

ARE you sure?
