One of the greatest changes which takes place when one is reborn in the Spirit (born again), is the Holy Spirit of God taking up residence in the body of the believer.
This “indwelling of the Holy Spirit” (as it is popularly called)–though He is encased in a body which is corruptible and weak–signals a number of important changes for the person who has undergone the transformation of the new birth.
“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”
–2CORINTHIANS 4:7
What are these changes which take place in the believer?
Here are FOUR important changes the believer will experience. (There are more than four, but these are four of the most important in one believer’s mind.)
1- The Holy Spirit opens the believer’s eyes to the truth. This includes the truth of the world around the believer, as well as the truth of God’s Word.
There will be much the believer sees to be false. At first, the believer will be taken aback at this change.
After all, he once believed what he can now see is false.
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
–John 16:13-14
“But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.”
–John 15:26-27
NOTE: The Holy Spirit will GUIDE the believer into “all truth.” He will not FORCE the believer into “all truth.”
Therefore it is important for the believer to learn to LISTEN to the Holy Spirit.
This may take some time for the believer to learn, particularly about those things the believer was taught from an early age to be true.
2-God marks the believer as one of His by the Holy Spirit.
This is not God’s complete Spirit, which will make the believer one with the Father when the believer gets his eternal, incorruptible body upon his entry into the kingdom of heaven. BUT it is an earnest–a sort of down payment of the glory which is to come.
“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
–Ephesians 1:13-14
3- The Holy Spirit helps the believer battle the desires of his sinful flesh.
“For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.”
–Galatians 5:17
Sure, the believer sometimes succumbs to the desires of his sinful flesh–but it is now a struggle, with the Holy Spirit helping the believer. Before the Holy Spirit came along, it was only one man constantly GIVING IN to the desires of his flesh.
There was very little struggle involved.
4- The Holy Spirit assists the believer in his prayers to God.
This is VERY IMPORTANT.
IF the believer prays according to the will of God, God will grant him ANYTHING THE BELIEVER ASKS.
“And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”
–1JOHN 5:14-15
So, it is extremely important for the believer to pray ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD.
The Holy Spirit ensures that the believer prays ACCORDING TO THE WILL OF GOD.
“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”
–Romans 8:26-27
A future article may detail other advantages to having God’s Holy Spirit.
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
