The Day Jesus Christ Returns to Earth

return of Jesus Christ

It has been said that the entire Bible–from Genesis to Revelation–is about Jesus Christ.

It has also been argued that Jesus is in EVERY book in the Bible. So, it stands to reason that the return of Jesus Christ to earth would be a central focus of Scripture.

It is.

In the Old Testament, it is called “the day of the LORD.

In the New Testament, it is called both “the day of the LORD” and “the day of the LORD Jesus.”

“To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.”
–-1CORINTHIANS 5:5

The wicked and foolish call it “the end of the world.

Some have referred to it as “the Second Coming.”

Others have said it is “when Jesus comes back to earth.”

Locally, it’s called “the climax of human history.”

So what does God’s Word have to say about that day?

Surprisingly enough, quite a lot.

In fact, there is much more written about the day Jesus returns than there is about heaven.

But what follows is only a part of what the Bible says about the day when Jesus returns to earth. To read the total descriptions of that day, one will have to undertake a study of those verses.

Jesus shall return to earth at the Mount of Olives–which is where Jesus ascended to heaven.

“And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day’s journey.”
–Acts 1:9-12

“Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle. And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.”
–Zechariah 14:3-4

On that day, God will gather the armies of evil men.

“For, behold, in those days, and in that time, when I shall bring again the captivity of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land. Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD. Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about.”
–Joel 3:1-2, 11-12

God will gather these armies of men to a place outside of Jerusalem called Armageddon. (This is located in the “valley of Jehoshaphat”).

“And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.”
–Revelation 16:16, 19:19

So, with all that in mind, we present a few of the events that will happen on the day Jesus Christ returns to earth.

1- The day Jesus Christ returns will be a day of GREAT wailing and crying by the wicked, who have had their way on the earth for the past 6000 years.

“Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.”
–Isaiah 13:6

“Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine; for it is cut off from your mouth.”
–Joel 1:5

“Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.”
–Joel 1:15

“Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.”
–Amos 5:16

day of the LORD

2- The day of the LORD is a day of God’s long-suffering vengeance on those who hate Him and persecute His people.

For the wicked of the earth–practically ALL of mankind–it will be a day of great destruction as Satan–as well as his wicked and foolish followers–is overthrown and the reign of Jesus Christ upon the earth begins.

“Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. “And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.”
–Isaiah 13:9, 11

“And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?”
–Joel 2:11

“For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low”
–Isaiah 2:12

“For it is the day of the LORD’S vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion.”
–Isaiah 34:8

“For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.”
–Jeremiah 46:10

“For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.”
–Obadiah 1:15

“And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour.”
–Zechariah 14:12-13

“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

“And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.

“And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.”
–Revelation 19:11-21

day of the LORD

3- The day Jesus Christ returns will be preceded by VERY specific signs in the heavens.

“Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.”
–Matthew 24:29-30

“And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.”
–Revelation 6:12-13

“the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining”
–Joel 2:10

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.”
–Joel 2:31

“The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining.”
–Joel 3:15

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come”
–Acts 2:20

“But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.”
–Mark 13:24-25

“For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.”
–Isaiah 13:10

“And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day”
–Amos 8:9

4- The day Jesus Christ returns will be a strange day; a gloomy day: neither dark nor light. There will be periods of darkness–as befits a day where the sun is darkened and the moon is as blood.  There will also be periods of what sounds like twilight. It will be cloudy and overcast.

“Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?”
–Amos 5:20

“Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations.”
–Joel 2:1-2

“For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.”
–Ezekiel 30:3

“And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light.”
–Zechariah 14:6-7

day of the LORD 4

Still, for all of the above, there will STILL be those who sincerely turn to the LORD and are saved by God’s mercy and grace.

“And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.”
–Joel 2:13,32

“Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.”
–Zephaniah 2:3

As stated earlier, this is only a PART of what God’s Word has to say about the day Jesus Christ returns to earth. The whole account of that day can be obtained by studying the Word of God.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
