Is the Truth Important? Why?

truth

The world has many methods of deception at its disposal.

This was brought to remembrance during a recent discussion.

After discussing the truthfulness of God’s Word for some time, the person suddenly said, “Why is the truth so important?  I don’t lose any sleep over this?  I don’t let it ruin my day.”

So, the truth was THEN not very important?

This sounded like a trick of semantics.

BUT, the question did remain: “Why is the truth important?

To answer the question, one must first determine if one is a believer or not.  The believer must recognize the truth because so many of the believer’s decisions depend upon 1- knowing the truth; and, 2- being led by the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of truth) which dwells within each believer.

“We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.”
–1JOHN 4:6

The believer must also determine who is a believer and who is not. God’s Word commands the believer to interact with believers and non-believers differently.

“Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother”
–Zechariah 7:9

“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality.”
–Romans 12:10,13

Knowing the truth is also important to the believer in his dealings with God.

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”
–Psalm 145:18

And to the non-believer?

Truth is also important to the non-believer, but in different ways.

Following are a few reasons why this is:

  1. It is important to determine the truth cost of items to be purchased (food, services, etc.).
  2. It is important to determine the truth of business dealings.  IF one NEEDS a car, one will likely not be happy if one purchases a watermelon.  If one desires a dog, one will not be pleased if one is given an alligator.
  3. It is important to determine the truth of what one is being told about one’s physical condition.
  4. It is important to determine the truth of what one is being told in order to make the best decisions about one’s future actions.

IF one bases what one does on lies, then one will very likely NOT be making decisions which will benefit one’s self.

AND, most importantly, one must know the truth concerning afflictions and the situation surrounding these setbacks in order to deal with such problems.

IF one doesn’t know the problem, one cannot find a solution.

Of course, modern man usually claims that the truth is important to him.

But this is a lie.

Modern man values his comfort above almost every other consideration.  As long as modern man maintains a certain comfort level, he is quite satisfied to be lied to.

Which is what motivates one to ask in the first place, “Why is the truth important?

DOES the reader believe the truth to be important?

OR, is this just something the reader says to seem upright?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
