“The grass is always greener over the septic tank.”
—Erma Bombeck
A common saying among men is “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.”
So what does that mean, really?
the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence
- Others’ circumstances seem more desirable than one’s own but in reality are often not.
So again: what does that mean, really?
“The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” is just another way for the world to get the reader to look at his “other options.”
Which means “Look around, you may see something you like better. It doesn’t hurt to look does it? See what else is out there.”
In fact, looking at the supposedly “greener grass” is likely where the phrase “greener pastures” came from.
- Any place or condition that is more favorable or beneficial.
What does God’s Word have to say about looking about to explore “other opportunities;” what “greener pastures” are available?
Actually, the Bible has MUCH to say about a person casting his eyes about, looking for “greener grass.”
“Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.”
–Philippians 4:11
“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”
–Luke 12:15
“But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment [clothing] let us be therewith content.”
–2TIMOTHY 6:6-8
“Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
–Hebrews 13:5
“Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
–Psalm 37:3-4
“Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.”
–Proverbs 15:16
“Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped, And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”
–Job 1:20-21
Those who are thinking about the greener grass which MAY be on the other side of that fence are not acting in accordance with God’s Word.
They are NOT content with what they have.
Otherwise, they would not be looking at, trying to measure how green the grass might be on the other side of the fence.
Just how green is that grass over there?
The first step to COVETING something is to set one eyes upon a thing.
Then, to consider it.
Finally, to COVET (intensely wish for) that thing.
This is the opposite of what the world teaches: that one should “visualize” (consider and then intensely wish for) what one wants and then GO AFTER IT!
So, what should one take away from all of this?
Be content with what one has.
If one is a believer, that which one has will certainly be enough to meet one’s needs.
And, if one is NOT a believer, it does not matter.
A non-believer will not heed advice from God’s Word.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. “
–Isaiah 26:3
DOES the reader wonder about the grass which grows on the other side?
DOES the reader believe he deserves the greenest grass?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
