“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”
–2CORINTHIANS 10:5
It has likely happened to everyone at one time or another.
One will be sitting comfortably at home, engrossed in a favorite activity OR changing gears to go out when a SUDDEN THOUGHT pops into one’s head. It was not there just seconds before, but NOW, that sudden thought has appeared, as if out of nowhere–and generally, this sudden thought is unrelated to ANYTHING you were thinking beforehand.
Such sudden thoughts often spur
- Irresistible urges.
- A sudden notion to “do something spontaneous.”
- An abrupt desire to “do something fresh and new–something OUTRAGEOUS!”
ALL are sudden thoughts; thoughts which were not even on one’s “radar” a few seconds earlier.
Where do such thoughts come from?
And why do they almost always lead one into troubles?
It can be something as simple as suddenly desiring to visit a restaurant or store to get “something good to eat.”
When one isn’t even hungry.
OR, it can be the sudden urge to call someone one hasn’t talked to in years.
(Often, there is a good reason for not talking to that particular person.)
Where do these sudden thoughts come from?
And why is there a near-universal acceptance of such unexpected ideas?
The world would have the reader believe that thoughts originate inside one’s mind and that we control the thoughts which enter into our consciousness.
YET, Google “mind control” and one gets almost 1.2 MILLION results.
And the discussion over the control of one’s thoughts is NOT a modern one: the discussion has been one which has been taking place for hundreds of years.
The sudden thoughts may be subtle, such as that thought to go to a restaurant to grab a tasty dessert when one is not hungry OR one has been trying to lose weight.
OR, the thought can be more insistent, becoming a persistent urge or near-compulsion.
There’s more to thoughts forming than most of us suspect.
How Do Thoughts Form? – Many thoughts that form originate from somewhere other than our minds.
“Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”
—2 Corinthians 10:5Ever wonder where those thoughts come from?
Some are formed while the reader is busy doing something else and before one knows it–he’s being tormented by one thought or another.
Where did that thought come from?
How did it get started?
It had to come from somewhere.
Torment: that’s a key clue as to where these thoughts originate.
It’s helpful if the readers stops when he becomes aware of this and traces the thought backwards to see where it originated. IF one does this, the answers will be quite surprising.
—Forming Thoughts and Taking Them Captive
Most just assume that they originate their thoughts and that the noise inside one’s mind is almost ALL self-generated.
Particularly in the times in which we now live, this is a dangerous assumption.
Especially IF one is given to the nearly-universal modern practice of buying into the suggestions contained in such sudden thoughts.
“If you believe that your thoughts originate inside your brain, do you also believe that television shows are made inside your television set?”
―-Warren Ellis

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
