Acknowledging God

acknowledge

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”
–Psalm 46:10

When defining “heathen,” many worldly dictionaries include the phrase “do not acknowledge the God of the Bible.”

heathen

of or relating to people or nations that do not acknowledge the God of the Bible

This brought to mind a recent conversation with a polytheistic, idol-worshipping acquaintance.

“I have a question I want to ask you.”

“What?”

“Why is it that you refer to “God,” but you rarely refer to any of  the gods you worship?”

“I am talking about [Here he spoke a name of one of the gods he worships].”

“Well, I’ve NEVER heard you refer to that god by his name. Never.  Is it because you were raised referring to God?”

“No.  I wasn’t raised that way.”

“Is it for the benefit of those you are talking to?”

“No. I don’t care what people think.”

“Then why do you refer to God“?

After a long, thoughtful pause: “I don’t know why I do that.”

It leads one to believe that even the heathen acknowledge God–even if they do not know why.

“I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.”
–Isaiah 45:23

“For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.”
–Romans 14:11

“That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
–Philippians 2:10-11

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
