Choosing One’s Fear

fear is the mindkiller

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
Frank Herbert, Dune

Over the years, more than one person has recited the “Fear is a mind-killer” passage from the book, Dune.

Though some resort to the quote as a calming mechanism and some appear to recite the passage as a verbal shot of courage, it seems that most use the passage as a sort of mantra meant to banish fear during stressful times.

HOWEVER, this runs contrary to God’s Word–the ONLY source of truth in a world full of lies–which declares that not all fear is created equal:  “fear of God” being a great asset–particularly in the times in which we live.

“By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.”
–Proverbs 16:6

“And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.”
–Job 28:28

“The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.”
–Psalm 25:14

“The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.”
–Psalm 145:18-19

“Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD.”
–Psalm 128:1-4

“For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.”
–Psalm 103:11

So, while the worldly are trusting to the words of Frank Herbert (a cog in the wheel of iniquity) to vanquish fear, God’s Word is urging believers to fear the LORD God.

Who is one to believe?

This is a clear illustration that one may choose his fear: those who have faith in the words of a sci-fi writer do not wish to live with any fear; those who have faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ, are to have a fear of God–and to enjoy all of the benefits such a healthy fear of God brings to those who fear Him.

One thing the worldly would do well to keep in mind: those who have a fear of the LORD do not fear men.

Or men’s scary stories.

Or the deeds of men.

One more thing the worldly would do well to consider: It is easy enough to test which fear brings its possessor true peace.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
–John 14:27

One final thing the worldly would do well to remember: choosing your fear wisely is wisdom indeed.

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
–Proverbs 9:10

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
