“Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not”
–Jeremiah 5:21
Jeremiah 5:21 refers to the foolish, deceived men who will NOT see or hear. Notice the prophet Jeremiah did not say these men CANNOT “see or hear;” he said they WILL NOT “see or hear.”
Though the deceived have eyes, they see not and though the deceived have ears, they hear not.
This thought is repeated and amplified throughout the Bible.
IN FACT, Isaiah 6:9 amplifies this thought.
“And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. “
And this is the basic problem with the deceived: they hear, yet they have no understanding; they see but do not perceive.
This is echoed in Acts 28:26-27.
“Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.”
This thought is one of the few concepts on which the world and God’s Word both agree.
“There are none so blind as those who will not see.”
–attributed to John Heywood, 1546
Again, notice that the worldly quote does not say those who would be blind CANNOT see; it says they WILL NOT see.
Big difference.
It is not that the deceived cannot see and hear when the government/media/education/ entertainment/culture lies to them: it is that the deceived do not place much importance on what IS important.
No doubt the reader is familiar with someone who is spiritually deceived.
Most know the person who is experiencing physical or mental troubles because of their destructive behavior (smoking, over-eating, bad relationships, enduring mental or physical abuse, drugs, alcohol, etc.). The person will often defend their behavior by making light of it. Sometimes the person will AGREE with the person trying to “talk sense to” (warn) him–just to get that person to shut up.
“It’s not as bad as it looks–or feels.”
“I know I should quit. This is killing me!”
“We all have to go sometime.”
Telling yourself lies does not have to make sense: many times, one lie will be contradictory to a second lie which the person believes.
It makes little difference if it “makes sense” or not.
—Self-Deception
And so, the deceived ARE ABLE see enough to save themselves: they choose not to.
It does not matter that the deceived do not sit down and ponder their deception and make a clear judgment to remain deceived (A great many make these decisions in a split second): what matters is that the deceived have enough clear information to KNOW they are in trouble (a great many may even tell others that “something is wrong”), yet DO NOTHING TO CHANGE THE PATH THEY ARE ON (one definition of “repent“).
What can be done?
One important tactic to combat this (largely) un-conscious decision-making is to focus on making conscious decisions and having reasons for believing as one believes.
Once more, the deceived can see enough to save themselves: they choose not to.
The deceived can hear enough to save themselves BUT they choose not to hear.
Proving once more–whether one is referring to present day or 2800 years ago–“There are none so blind as those who will not see.”
[NOTE: This is one of those topics which will be expanded upon in the future.]
DOES the reader find himself using “mental shorthand” (automatically jumping to a conclusion before engaging in any thought)? Those who use mental shorthand the most usually become very comfortable with using this method of avoiding thought.
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
