People do not believe lies because they have to, but because they want to.”
—Malcolm Muggeridge
Recently, it was proposed that man believes lies because he is looking for approval.
Mostly, the approval of others (who may or may not know that they are being lied to).
An interesting idea.
Man KNOWS he is constantly deceived–by the media, by entertainment, by the education system and (especially) by politicians–yet he turns to these known liars for his “news.”
Yes, there are “news junkies” (who may or may not appreciate the approval of others), but it was proposed that most men consult those who deceive them to gain the approval of others with which they come in contact. (“News junkies” are claimed to have OTHER motivation than approval.)
The person who proposed this concept gave several examples as to why modern man chooses to believe those he KNOWS lie to him.
- Such modern men THINK they know what is happening.
- Such men do not mind being lied to AS LONG AS THEY CAN BE A PART OF CONVERSATION.
- Others believe such modern men are knowledgeable and well-informed. Others may even consult such moderns to find out what they know.
- Those who believe deceits feel like they have no other alternative but to turn to those who deceive them. (This is the “What-else-can-I-do?” Theory.)
The Bible generally agrees with this idea and calls such deceits “smooth things,” which implies men want to hear those things which allow them to live the way they wish; to avoid those words which make them uncomfortable.
Basically, the Bible says man will be comfortable with that which does not force him to consider his bad behavior (sin).
Basically, it was proposed that man will be comfortable with lies SO LONG AS HE CAN USE THOSE LIES TO GAIN THE APPROVAL OF OTHERS.
Regardless, the reader doubtless knows of someone who is comfortable with being lied to: a relative, a friend, a co-worker, someone.
The reasons given are beyond count.
Does the reader turn to those he KNOWS deceive him for more information?
“The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?”
–Jeremiah 5:31
“That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits”
–Isaiah 30:9-10
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
