A reader sent an email attachment which prompted some thinking on liars.
And THEN, shortly thereafter, an Internet discussion was stumbled upon which revolved around the question “ALL thieves are liars but are all liars thieves?”
SO, some additional thinking was devoted to liars AND thieves.
This piece is largely the result of that reflection.
FIRST, that emailed article.
The piece provided a good quote from Mark Twain about lying.
“Everybody lies….every day, every hour, awake, asleep, in his dreams, in his joy, in his mourning. If he keeps his tongue still his hands, his feet, his attitude will convey deception.”
One glaring error was the statement: “The reason why people are habitual liars is because it works for them.”
Even a person who is not well-versed in the Bible can know this is not right.
How many readers know of someone who is called “a congenital liar” who lies when telling the truth would lead to a greater advantage? Though the truth would work much better for them, many lie anyway. There is something which compels them to avoid telling the truth.
Actually, God’s Word informs that the reason people lie is that lying is their nature; since the fall of man, men–whose flesh is basically dirt–are natural-born liars UNLESS they undergo the transformation of the spiritual rebirth. Regardless of what those in the churches may claim, this spiritual rebirth (being born again) is EXTREMELY rare among men.
“Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able.”
–Luke 11:24
“Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.”
–Matthew 7:14
The article was interesting for several reasons; one of them being that it presented some new views on lying and liars. This article may be revisited at some future point.
SECOND, the discussion over the question, ““ALL thieves are liars but are all liars thieves?”
All men lie. Even those who regard the Bible as a product of human effort know this.
Psalm 116:11 says it best: “…all men are liars.”
So, it might easily be claimed that all thieves are liars.
BUT, are all liars thieves?
Even though theft is one of the BIG FIVE end times sins–the others being idolatry, fornication, murder and sorcery–there is nothing in God’s Word to indicate that all men are thieves. These are sins so prevalent in the end times that almost all men will NOT repent of these ungodly behaviors.
“And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk: Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.”
–Revelation 9:21-22
One side of that Internet discussion made the claim that all liars ARE thieves because liars “steal the truth” from those they lie to.
Which sounds like a good argument until one considers “Can the truth be stolen?”
Yes, the truth can be concealed by a liar, but the liar does not own the truth. The truth can be had from more than one source.
SO: are all liars thieves?
No doubt this discussion will continue.
DOES the reader ever wonder about liars and thieves?
IS the reader familiar with a liar or a thief?
DOES the reader consider giving up on the ways the world advises to handles such men and following instead what God’s Word advises?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
