TANSTAAFL: There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch.
“There ain’t no such thing as a free lunch” (alternatively, “There is no such thing as a free lunch” or other variants) is a popularadage communicating the idea that it is impossible to get something for nothing. […] The “free lunch” in the saying refers to the 19th-century practice in American bars of offering a “free lunch” in order to entice drinking customers.
These little bits of information will serve as an introduction as to why the Internet as we know it will dramatically CHANGE in the near future.
PREVIOUSLY, readers have been able to pay a fee to an internet service provider (such as Comcast), and once they had a connection for their home computer to the Internet, readers were able to enjoy a wide variety of (MOSTLY) free news and information.
Oh, there were some specialized information services which charged for access, but by and large, once connected to the Internet, the information and services did not cost the user any more money beyond what he had invested in getting connected to the Internet in the first place.
Has the reader ever wondered why this took place?
Has the reader ever wondered why so many unique-content organizations (such as CBS News, various magazines and big city newspapers) handed out their products on the Internet for free (or at best, for pennies)?
And so, at some point soon, the reader will NOT ONLY have to pay his connection fee to “hook up” to the Internet, he will also be paying an ADDITIONAL monthly fee (or fees) for the content he desires to see.
This is already taking place at numerous previously-free sites, while others have made the transition a bit easier by offering so many “free” articles per month and–after those are used up–the rest of the content is behind a paywall for subscribers only.
At first, there will be a LOT of “choice“–for those willing to pay to access it.
But then, as so often happens, consolidations will occur and the giants of the industry will offer various packages of content from various websites.
AND there will be the usual grumbling and complaining. But those who provide the content will argue there is NO free lunch.
AND this or that politician will posture about how he will “keep the Internet free.”
AND a select FEW will drop their Internet connections–at least for a while.
AND THEN, just as the Internet changed, the public’s conversation will CHANGE. Users will brag about the great deals they got from so-and-so and how Brand X is the best and if you are not using Brand Z, you are a loser.
Most of the public will divert money from some other event (such as going to see a movie or family night out or some similar leisure time activity).
It is suspected that those who supply the Internet with content had this in mind from the very beginning.
How could they not?
Build an audience, get some “hooked” on their product and then, transition to a time when that audience–particularly those who are “hooked“–will be required to pay a monthly bill for the pleasure of, not only staying connected, but staying connected in a worthwhile manner.
And those with cherished memories of signing onto the Internet to “surf” and discover those things they did not know will talk fondly of when the Internet was FREE during the World’s Longest Free Introductory Time Period EVER!
And those who grew up during that free introductory time period and expected that it would continue on forever?
They will tell wide-eyed, incredulous youngsters about the time they ate a free Internet lunch for YEARS.
DOES the reader believe that things will continue tomorrow as they have today?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
