The last day of 2019 seemed to prompt TWO questions from those one met; one questions more easily answered than the other.
The first (and most popular) question was also the most easily answered:“What are you doing for New Year’s Eve?”
The first half-dozen or so times one was asked this question, the answer was short and sweet: “Nothing.”
This USUALLY brought half-chuckles and responses of “Really?” or some sort of confirmation (“You’re doing nothing on New Years Eve?”) One person related how, one year they did nothing and how they have basically regretted it ever since.
SO, later answers to the question were modified to “Nothing EXCITING.”and “Probably just stay at home and work.”
THIS seemed to be more easily accepted–until it was realized that almost all of those who asked didn’t really want to know the answer. Asking “What are you doing for New Year’s Eve?” on the last day of the year is like asking“How you been?” the other 364 days: just an act of sociability.
No one REALLY wants to hear how you have been; they just ask as a way of greeting. They expect “Fine and yourself?” before moving on to more important chatting.
THIS first question was the most easily answered of the two questions.
The second question (or a variation thereof) was only posed by a few.
However, these few seemed to really want an answer–if only to spark a discussion by disagreeing.
“You think 2020 will be a good year or a bad year?”
The standard answer which seemed to work the best was something on the order of “2020 will probably be a lot like 2019, 2018 and 2017. Did you think those years were good? Then you’ll probably find 2020 to be a good year. Did you think those years were bad? Then you’ll probably not like 2020 much better.”
Of those who who responded to this answer, most assumed that the person who gave the answer did not think much of those earlier years–or the prospects of 2020.
Most also displayed their personal convictions that “Things will get better. They always do!” This left the impression that those years were not so hot for these people either.
One person chose “You could be right.”
Which is almost NEVER the wrong thing to say whenever the conversation turns to controversial or contentious topics.
What will 2020 bring to the reader?
HOPEFULLY, 2020 will bring everlasting joy and eternal happiness.
THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
The choice is in the reader’s hands.
However, for the vast majority, it will be the same satanic antics they have been used to (though it may be a brand new year and the start of a brand new decade).
WILL 2020 be a fresh, new year for the reader OR will 2020 be more of the same old, same old?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
