EMPTY LIFE: A Series of Appetites to be Satisfied

appetites

“The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.”
–Luke 12:23

How much time does the reader spend–in an average day–on satisfying the appetites of the flesh?

IF the reader kept a detailed journal, he would likely know the answer–though the answer might not be to the reader’s liking.

A few years ago, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released a table of how the AVERAGE AMERICAN spends their time each day.  According to the table–and there are other studies which claim more or less time for each daily activity–Americans spend a great deal of time each day satisfying the cravings of their flesh.

FOR EXAMPLE:

about 1.5 hours   –        Eating and drinking (though other sources have this figure at around 2 hours a day when snacking and
eating while occupied doing some other activity is included.  And food preparation/cleaning up adds another 30-45 minutes per day).

about 6.5 hours   –        Leisure activities (surfing on the computer, answering email, socializing, talking on the phone, social media, watching TV, listening to music. BY FAR, the greatest amount of this time–over 3 hours/day–was spent watching TV.  This includes watching videos on phones/computers.)

About an hour each day was spent BUYING things (good and services).

That’s approximately nine hours–over half of most people’s waking hours–spent on satisfying appetites.

Only a few minutes per day were spent caring for family members or those outside of the family.

There was no record of how much time the average American spent smoking, drinking liquor or beer, gambling/playing the lottery or activities many would classify as “SIN“–probably MORE than a few minutes per day were accounted for by these activities.

There was also no record of how much time was spent pursuing money and the things of this world.

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”
–1JOHN 2:15-16

Again, pursuing money and the things of this world–and this includes MORE than material goods;  this also includes time spent chasing after the approval/acclaim of the world–probably took up more than a few minutes of the average American’s day.

All of which leads to a thought with which the reader may or may not agree.

When one spends over half their waking hours of an average day satisfying the appetites of the flesh and the desires of the flesh, THEN that person–for all of the “fun” and other distractions keeping that person busy–has an empty life.

Does the reader have an empty life?

“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?”
–Matthew 6:25

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16

Camouflage and Cover Stories

Cover story

“There is NO magic.  There ARE displays of demonic power.”
Magic is Not

Witchcraft/sorcery without the clever, well-crafted explanations, masquerades or other attempts to deceive is STILL witchcraft/sorcery.

There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord.”
–Deuteronomy 18:10-12

Just a friendly end times reminder.

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Something Completely Different

different

“Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.”
Margaret Mead

In the times in which we live, it is VERY difficult to come across something completely different than what one has experienced or heard before.

VERY DIFFICULT.

And so, it was quite a surprise to hear someone recently expound how it was they knew they were going to heaven.

“I’m just a nice guy. I ALWAYS let others go ahead of me in line.  I ALWAYS wave the other car to go where they’re going before I go.  If I get to a parking spot–especially in a crowded parking lot–the same time as someone else, I let them have it–even if I got there a little before they did.”

…and that was all that was said on the matter.

In the times in which we live, it is VERY difficult to come across something completely different than what has come before.

VERY DIFFICULT.

And this is why the encounter with the polite man who was sure he was bound for heaven sticks in one’s memory.

It most likely was the first time ANYONE had ever heard of Salvation by Good Manners.

HAS the reader heard of any unusual salvation doctrine?
