Recently, a newspaper insert promoting the popular TV shows of the past contained an article headlined “TV dinners: a look back at an invention which changed the way we eat.”
This sounded intriguing.
Did TV dinners–those bits and pieces of frozen turkey, meat loaf, fish and brownies loaded into oven-ready aluminum trays–REALLY change the way we eat?
And if so, then HOW?
Despite the promising headline on the cover of the newspaper insert, the article did NOT deliver the promised information.
The piece itself attempted to trade upon that deception commonly called “nostalgia“: a remembrance of a past which never was–which included the culinary curse which went by the name of “TV dinner.”

A spirited search of the vast resources of the Internet also failed to turn up any data on the claim that TV dinners “changed the way we eat.”
And so, a search of one’s memory files for any information on the subject was all that remained.
No good memories of TV dinners were unearthed. Only of the time a large amount of cheap TV dinners were purchased when on sale “4 for a dollar.”
It didn’t take too many times of choking down the bland, tasteless morsels to convince that, at “4 for a dollar ,” the trays were grossly overpriced.
When one has a strong memory of some product or occasion, one usually should look for confirmation: that the memory wasn’t just something manufactured to help prove a point.
And so, NO record was found of any condemned person requesting–at ANY time, ANYWHERE–a TV dinner for his last meal.
The effort to make TV dinners seem like an exciting menu item from the past is just a small part of mis-remembering the Good Old Days.
There were NO good old days.
“Nothing is more responsible for the good old days than a bad memory.”

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
