During times of high stress and worry, man develops little things to say to himself to help cope with the high stress and worry.
These little things he says often take the form of what is commonly called a “MANTRA.”
a – (originally Hinduism) A phrase repeated to assist concentration during meditation. [from 1956]
b – slogan or phrase often repeated.
One such mantra–particularly well-known after the 1965 publication of the Frank Herbert sci-fi novel, Dune, which popularized it–was the Litany Against Fear.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

Regardless of where they come from, many people use these little sayings in an effort to help them get through times of chaos and commotion.
In, other words: people turn to mantras because–by mindlessly repeating the words over and over again–they are able to achieve a sort of second-rate comfort.
“But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”
–Matthew 6:7
A great many different phrases are used as mantras.
It doesn’t really matter WHAT it is that the person is repeating; what matters is that the person has something–ANYTHING!–to repeat.
Perhaps the mere action of repeating a phrase takes one’s mind off of his present troubles?
There was once a clever young man, who in times of great stress, was often overheard whispering to himself, “A stitch in time saves nine.”
Finally, one day the young man was asked about his repetition of that old saying.
“When you are in trouble, you don’t think straight. I’m just reminding myself to not be in a hurry and to think straight.”
So, ANYTHING can be used as a mantra–as long as the one repeating it has some trust in the words.
And that’s brings us to the theme of this piece: words which are repeated during times of stress to make oneself feel better.
It seems as if one of the latest phrases being repeated is “BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.”
One hears this being repeated endlessly and offered as some sort of comfort when someone grumbles about the inconveniences surrounding life during a pandemic.
This particular mantra can be employed in a variety of situations.
- IF the person believes there is safety in numbers.
- IF the person would rather be wrong in a crowd than be right by himself.
- IF the person truly believes that “They wouldn’t be telling us to do it if it wasn’t the right thing to do.”
- As encouragement to someone discouraged by the amount of hoop-jumping he has encountered.
- As a sort of verbal compensation for having to mindlessly do something one is fairly certain will not help.
- As a distraction from what is happening in the real world.
- IF the person believes saying “Because everyone else is doing it,” makes him sound like an unthinking bootlicker.
“Better safe than sorry.”
The phrase has been heard being uttered by “essential” workers to members of the public who are not happy at living through another week of increasingly onerous corona-rules.
“Better safe than sorry.”
Perhaps it is being repeated recently because it DOES serve as a mantra and it DOES offer the speaker a sort of comfort?
One COULD suggest something appropriate from God’s Word instead–but since most no longer not believe God’s Word, this most probably would not help–and it will just make certain folks angry.
At any rate:
“Better safe than sorry.”
Truly a phrase for the end times…
…and end times man.
HAS the reader recently heard someone say “Better safe than sorry“?
DID the reader give this more than a passing thought?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
-–Romans 1:16
