Overheard

It is startling the number of curious things one overhears when one is trying to concentrate on something altogether different.

OVERHEARD

While standing in line at a deli to get some roasted chicken nuggets, a woman who was working behind the counter was talking (loudly, so as to be heard over the various machines and fryers which were running) about how she sees coming to work during the pandemic.

“Hey!  I’m here!  Every day!

“And I’m here right in the middle of it.  I can get that virus just like anyone else.  I figure I’m like a first responder.

“But hey!

“We all gotta go sometime–that’s why I’m here everyday.!”

This line of conversation continued for some minutes.

It’s funny how a few off-hand remarks about buying beer sticks in one’s mind:  It got one listener to wonder if that pleasantly-insistent woman sounded so heroic the next time she bought a case of beer?

OVERHEARD

While in the over-the-counter drug section of a big box retailer, a guy was REALLY fired up for some reason about a certain reality TV family which the media promotes on a daily basis.

The exact cause of his pique at this family (of sisters, their children and the assortment of paramours) was unknown: the man was out of earshot when his harangue slowly made its way into a passing listener’s awareness.

“The thing that really gets me.  They re-touch ALL of their photos.  If they didn’t airbrush their photos, no one would give them a second look. They’re grotesque!  There would be a MAJOR malfunction if that airbrush ever went down!  Definitely chunky monkeys.  Some real Herefords! I kid you not!”

OVERHEARD

While waiting to pay for gas at a gas station, two guys discussing another guy they both knew.

“He likes to go fast!  He’s into those crotch rockets!”

“He likes going fast so much, he gets stupid.”

“Yeah, he’ll probably die on a bike.”

“A super-fast bike! Stupid, yeah.”

“But at least he’ll die happy.”

OVERHEARD

At a convenient store, two women were chatting in the next aisle.

“You know my sister [NAME], right?”

“Yeah.”

“The nurse?”

“Yeah.”

She works at the hospital.  She’s been telling everyone that she’s just trying to do whatever it takes to keep everyone safe.”

“Yeah.”

“But you know, [NAME]…she can’t fool ME!  She likes the money.  That’s why she’s there.  She likes that money!”

This prompted thoughts in one listener of another nurse who “likes the money.”

The curious things one overhears when one is trying NOT to overhear others chatter.

BUT the curious things overheard DO shed some light on the different things which moderns value.

AND, by passing them along, one seems to clear them from one’s mind.

DOES the reader pay much attention to the dozens of snippets of conversation overheard each week?

HOW much of what is overheard makes much sense?

It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
1 Corinthians 15:1-8

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
