“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
–Philippians 4:7
During a (fairly) recent conversation about the importance of having peace in one’s life, the following (highly surprising!) comment was made.
“I think peace is over-rated.”
Asked to explain such a shocking thought, the man who made it didn’t back down.
“What’s peace ever done for me? I sleep good most of the time. If you haven’t done anything to worry about, you ought to sleep good.”
“But that’s not true. You regularly complain about your spare cellphone battery being dead (in case there’s an electrical outage) or whether someone is messing with your stuff.”
“So?”
“So if you’re worried enough to be planning what to do if your spare cellphone isn’t working, you’re not at peace. You’re fearful.”
“Fearful?”
“I’m not saying you’re terrified. I’m saying you are not at peace. That you don’t know what peace is–and if you ever had real true peace, you would put a HIGH value on it. In fact, even if you did know what true peace was, you wouldn’t trade it for all of the cold coffee in Columbia.”
It was at this point that it would have been helpful to have been able to quote an ETPR article from about six months ago, but at the time of the discussion, it was not remembered.
“FEAR” is just a vague idea UNLESS one is afflicted with that which makes the blood pound in one’s ears and the heart jackhammer so hard, at times it seems it will beat a hole through one’s chest.
“PEACE” is only a fuzzy concept UNLESS one has suffered from a lack of serenity.
[…]
To any who have lived through such periods of extreme doubt, mental unrest and anxiety, these thoughts are only the beginning of an old, familiar discussion which could last for days.
To everyone else?
They are just words.
—Just Words
Those who long for peace tell themselves that everything will be better in the morning. That their uneasiness is because of the darkness that is the night.
But then, those who long for peace very quickly find that sunlight provides little comfort. In fact, sunlight causes a hundred-and-one different shapes and shadows which catch the eye of those without peace–shapes and shadows which are turned this way and that–as they play tricks on the one who desires rest and peace.
IF one has no peace, fear is more than just a word: it is a constant, nagging weight around one’s neck.
Though there was a BIT of backpedaling on the part of the one who made that so-surprising statement, he generally stuck to his initial claim that he thought “Peace is over-rated.”
Which he will certainly remember the next time that doubts interrupt what COULD HAVE BEEN a good night’s sleep.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
–John 14:27

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
