“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”
–2TIMOTHY 4:3-4
Recently, someone wondered “Why are so many stories told?”
And make no mistake: particularly in America, the stories come fast and furious, with little rest in between.
Why are so many stories told?
Why are stories so popular–especially with the deceived?
There are several reasons.
1- Stories help the masses remember propaganda points. Repeating a memorable story is a very effective propaganda technique.
This point is behind MOST of the news stories told today–especially the ones in 24/7-around-the-clock coverage.
“The receptivity of the masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.”

2- Stories help sell whatever the storyteller is selling, whether it be a product or a service or a deception.
“All marketers tell stories. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, even if it is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better–and look cooler–than $20 no names. . . and believing it makes it true.”
—Seth Godin
3- Telling and retelling a story helps many people feel they are more than just a part of the landscape. Telling a story to another makes people feel they belong; that they are passing along important information—whether they believe what they are saying or not.
Storytelling is a form of SHARING–and telling a story is the only way many get to share.
Storytelling as a way to foster a sense of belonging in family businesses
4- Moderns have a variety of ways to listen to a story: movies, TV shows, songs, newspapers and magazines, books, casual conversations: the list goes on and on.
It doesn’t matter if one wants to hear a story in a crowded restaurant or while sitting alone, staring at a smartphone: what is important is that a story is being told.
It seems that if the modern world has perfected ONE skill, it is storytelling.
And though the methods employed and the venues used in telling stories may have changed, the experience of listening to a story–true or not–has remained the same.
Few Americans sit in the dark around campfires with paint on their faces listening to a witch doctor tell stories explaining nature, history and customs.
Instead, Americans sit in darkened movie theaters, which tell them stories explaining nature, history or customs.

And the LIE behind most modern stories?
The STORY is what’s important.
It doesn’t matter if the story is true or not.
“Stories are the most important thing in the world.”
—Philip Pullman
DOES the reader enjoy a good story, whether it is true or not?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
