“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.”
“And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.”
God’s Word informs us that man was created “a little lower than the angels.”
YET, God’s Word also informs (in numerous places) that man is arrogant and prideful. Because of his arrogance and pride, man is an easy target for the whispers of Satan, who suggests that man is not all that.
And so, man often reassures himself that he is more than mere man by constructing taller buildings; by building faster modes of transportation (planes, trains, automobiles); by accumulating bigger collections of things.
This deception contributed to the myth of the Ubermensch (Superman).
The German prefix über can have connotations of superiority, transcendence, excessiveness, or intensity, depending on the words to which it is attached. Mensch refers to a human being, rather than a male specifically.
But the efforts of man are doomed to obsolescense: instead of reassurance, man only gets more evidence that his efforts are as a passing wisp of a vapor.
“Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. “
No matter how tall man may construct a building, another man will make one which is taller.
No matter how fast man may go in one of his inventions, another man will later go faster.
No matter how much stuff a man may accumulate, he will die and someone else will enjoy the fruits of his hoarding.
“And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?”
This futility of man’s efforts to leave behind something to be remembered by future generations is captured in the poem Ozymandias.
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
YET, man need look no further than God’s Word if reassurance is ever needed.
“What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.”
YET, because most men do NOT believe God’s Word, they embark on fool’s errands to manufacture SOMETHING–anything!–which will allow their names to be on the lips of future generations of man.
Because most men do NOT believe God’s Word, they erect taller buildings; vehicles on which they have worked are coaxed to go ever faster; great piles of stuff valued by man AT THAT PARTICULAR TIME are gathered.
Because most men do NOT believe God’s Word, they pursue reassurance that they are MORE than man: that they are superman.
Supermen who are as the grass of the field.
“As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.”
DOES the reader believe that all of the bridges, roads and other manmade constructions which are named after man will endure?
It is not YET too late: there is still time to change direction (repent), place your faith (hope) for the future entirely on Jesus Christ and enter the kingdom of heaven.
DOES the reader believe he is saved?

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. ”
–1 Corinthians 15:1-8
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
